Deputy Commissioner Varjeet Walia on Friday honoured Special Olympics swimmer Bhavik Atwal for his outstanding achievements at state and national swimming competitions. The recognition ceremony took place in Jalandhar, where the DC praised the athlete's determination and hard work.

National and State-Level Medals

Bhavik Atwal secured a gold medal in the 25-metre freestyle, a bronze medal in the 50-metre freestyle, and another bronze in the 25x4-metre freestyle relay at the Special Olympics Swimming Nationals held in Karnataka. These victories highlight his consistent performance at the highest level of competition.

Earlier, he won a silver medal in the 25-metre freestyle at the Special Olympics Bharat National Championship in Mumbai. He also earned two silver medals in the 25-metre and 50-metre freestyle events at the Special Olympics Punjab held in Patiala.

Recent Triumphs and Government Recognition

Recently, Bhavik demonstrated his exceptional talent again by winning two gold medals in the 25-metre and 50-metre freestyle events at another swimming competition. In recognition of his sporting achievements, the Punjab government awarded him Rs 1.35 lakh as a sports incentive.

Praising the talented swimmer, the DC said, "Athletes like Bhavik are an inspiration to society because of their hard work and determination. He has proved that no obstacle is greater than strong determination and courage."

Inspiration for Special Needs Children

Walia added that through his talent and hard work, Bhavik had not only brought pride to his parents and the district but had also become a source of inspiration for other children with special needs. Congratulating Bhavik’s parents, the DC emphasised that their dedication, encouragement, and continuous support played a vital role in the child’s success.

The Deputy Commissioner also appreciated the initiatives undertaken by the District Special Olympics Association, Jalandhar, and assured full support from the district administration for the overall development of children with special needs and the promotion of their sports activities.
