Viking Row Celebration Takes Over World Cup
Erling Haaland and the Norway national team have made a significant impact at the ongoing FIFA World Cup 2026 with their powerful performances. However, equally captivating is the 'Viking Row' celebration performed by fans and players, which has become a viral sensation. The celebration involves fans imitating the synchronized rowing of a traditional Viking ship, symbolizing unity, strength, and collective spirit. Thousands of fans sit in perfect unison, mimicking oar movements to the chant 'Ro!', creating a spectacle that has spread across stadiums and social media.
Origin of the Celebration
The celebration originated from Ole Froystad, who in December 2025 came up with the chant 'Ro!' inspired by Viking rowing. The idea was adopted by Norway's official supporters' group, Oljeberget Supporterklubb, and developed into a coordinated ritual. Torstein Hamran, a board member, explained, 'It all started with Ole's idea. Then we developed it together.' They even recorded a song called 'Viking Blood,' released in late March, which features the Viking Row in the background and became one of the biggest songs in Norway.
Early Reception and Breakthrough
The first attempt at the celebration occurred in late March against Switzerland in Oslo, but it received mixed reactions. Torstein recalled, 'Some people loved it, while others thought it looked a bit silly.' The real breakthrough came in June after a 3-1 win over Sweden. An instructional video was shared on social media, and a handcrafted Viking horn was introduced to signal the start. 'The day after, Ole and our capo both told me, 'This is going to be huge.' They were right,' said Torstein.
Choreography and Coordination
The celebration appears spontaneous but is highly coordinated. When the Viking horn sounds, thousands of fans sit down. 'Standing is the natural thing for football supporters, so asking everyone to sit is actually the hardest part,' Torstein explained. He stands in front with a drum, striking it twice to begin the chant. 'It's the pauses that build all the tension before the explosion,' he added. As the tournament progressed, two drums were used to synchronize supporters across different sections of massive stadiums.
Player Involvement and Viral Spread
The celebration gained further traction when players joined in after wins. After Norway's 2-1 victory over Ivory Coast, Torstein described a memorable moment: 'The players wanted my drum. I had to run across several sections of the stadium to get it to them.' The drum, bought second-hand in 2023, became famous worldwide. Ole Froystad shared, 'Hearing people shouting 'Ro!' through the streets of New York was incredible. It was one of the greatest moments of my life.' He also recalled the match against Senegal when players performed the Viking Row perfectly in sync with supporters, saying, 'I almost cried. It was extraordinary.'
Global Appeal and Upcoming Match
Fans from other countries have embraced the celebration. Torstein noted, 'Supporters from other countries absolutely love it. We have even done the Viking Row with them before and after matches. That is what a World Cup is all about.' On Sunday, Norway will face five-time champions Brazil at the New York New Jersey Stadium. Despite being outnumbered, Torstein remains unfazed: 'I was only two years old when Norway last qualified. I have waited my whole life for this moment. Now we're playing Brazil in the Round of 16. It almost doesn't feel real.'
