Jaipur: Former India hockey international star Gurbax Singh Grewal passed away in Zirakpur, Chandigarh on Friday. He was a member of the national hockey team that won a bronze medal at the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City.
Grewal died of a heart attack. He was 84 years old.
Gurbax and his brother Balbir Singh Grewal participated together and represented the country in the 1968 Mexico Olympics. That was the first time in the history of Indian hockey that two real brothers participated together in one Olympics.
Gurbax was a senior sports officer in Western Railways and recruited several Rajasthan players into the Railways hockey team. After retirement from Western Railways in Mumbai, he served as the honorary secretary of the Mumbai Hockey Association.
His contribution to Indian hockey, especially in nurturing talent from Rajasthan, will always be remembered. The hockey fraternity mourns the loss of a true legend.
