Goan Teams Secure Semifinal Berths in U-17 National School Games Beach Volleyball

Panaji witnessed contrasting victories as Goan teams advanced to the semifinals of the U-17 National School Games Beach Volleyball Championship at Miramar on Wednesday. While the boys' team delivered a commanding performance, the girls' squad engaged in a dramatic three-set thriller that kept spectators on edge.

Boys' Team Delivers Dominant Performance

The boys' quarterfinal matchup featured Narendra Vasudev Gaonkar and Vedant Devidas Kavlekar facing CBSE, a team that had struggled in the group stage. CBSE had managed only three points against Gujarat in their previous match and qualified for the knockout stage primarily because their group contained just two teams.

From the opening serve, Goa established complete control over the match. The home team dominated both sets with remarkable precision, securing a decisive victory with scores of 21-3 and 21-2. Their performance demonstrated why they entered the tournament as strong favorites.

Girls' Team Fights Through Nail-Biting Contest

Simultaneously on court number four, the girls' quarterfinal between Goa and Punjab developed into the day's most exciting encounter. What began as a routine match transformed into a high-pressure battle when the home team dropped the first set, igniting nervous energy throughout the stadium.

Despite playing on familiar territory, Deepali Kusta Gawas and Roshni Rama Gaonkar appeared tense during the initial stages. The pressure of performing before a vocal home crowd, which included Sports Director Ajay Gaude, contributed to several unforced errors. Critical mistakes on serves and smashes allowed Punjab to claim the first set 22-20.

The second set witnessed a complete transformation in Goa's approach. Adopting a safer, more strategic style, Deepali and Roshni consistently placed the ball in difficult positions for their opponents. This tactical shift forced Punjab's Meenakshi Soni and Diksha onto the defensive, resulting in numerous errors. Goa raced to a 6-0 lead and maintained control throughout, winning the set 21-6 to level the match.

Decisive Third Set Drama

The final set began with Goa seizing early momentum, establishing a 3-0 advantage. However, Punjab mounted a spirited comeback, building a three-point lead by the halfway mark. At 8-5, the match appeared to be slipping away from the home team.

With Goa trailing 6-9, Deepali produced a spectacular full-length dive to keep a crucial point alive, energizing both her partner and the supportive crowd. Roshni followed with two consecutive aces, shifting momentum decisively in Goa's favor. The home team eventually served for match point at 14-10.

Punjab demonstrated remarkable resilience, saving two match points with gritty defensive plays. However, Goa ultimately secured the winning point, completing a hard-fought 20-22, 21-6, 15-12 victory to advance to the semifinals.
