Goa's Young Beach Volleyball Stars Shine at National School Games
The atmosphere was electric at Miramar beach on Tuesday as the U-17 National School Games Beach Volleyball Championship kicked off with packed stands and VIP spectators, including Sports Minister Ramesh Tawadkar, creating a high-pressure environment for the young competitors.
Nervy Yet Triumphant Victory for Hosts
In a marquee opening night clash, the Goa boys' team, comprising 16-year-olds Narendra Vasudev Gaonkar from Mauxi, Valpoi and Vedant Devidas Kavlekar from Santa Cruz, faced Andhra Pradesh. Despite their evident height advantage and technical skill, the duo appeared initially overwhelmed by the large crowd, marking their first experience playing in such a setting.
The match unfolded as a tense affair, with Goa securing a straight-set victory of 21-15, 21-19 to confirm their place in the knockout stages. The hosts started shakily, allowing Andhra Pradesh to take an early lead. However, once they found their rhythm, they closed the first set convincingly.
The second set saw Goa trailing by two points at 15-17, seemingly on the brink of losing their advantage. A critical service error from Andhra Pradesh, combined with a decisive block from Narendra and a clever drop shot from Vedant, enabled Goa to rally with four consecutive points, ultimately sealing the set and match at 21-18.
Dominant Performance Throughout the Day
This victory marked Goa's second win of the opening day, having earlier swept aside Puducherry with scores of 21-17, 21-9 in the morning session. These results propelled Goa to the top of Group C, securing their qualification for the quarterfinals.
The presence of Sports Minister Ramesh Tawadkar added to the occasion, and had the match extended, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant was also expected to attend, highlighting the event's significance.
Girls' Team Adds to Goa's Success
In the girls' section, the home team of Deepali Kusta Gawas and Roshni Rama Gaonkar delivered a strong performance, defeating Andhra Pradesh 21-17, 21-14. This win positions them favorably for quarterfinal qualification, despite an upcoming challenging group-stage match against Tamil Nadu.
Quarterfinals Set for Wednesday
All quarterfinal matches are scheduled for Wednesday evening, starting at 4 PM. The Goa boys will face CBSE in their quarterfinal clash, aiming to continue their impressive run in the tournament.
The National School Games Beach Volleyball Championship has showcased emerging talent from Goa, with both teams demonstrating resilience and skill under pressure, setting the stage for an exciting knockout phase in Miramar.
