Football Icon Erling Haaland Makes Strategic Move Into Chess Investment
Global football superstar Erling Haaland is expanding his portfolio beyond the pitch, making a significant investment in the world of chess. The Norwegian striker, renowned for his goal-scoring prowess, has backed the prestigious Norway Chess organization and its newly launched Total Chess World Championship Tour.
Haaland Co-Founds Chess Mates Company
Together with businessman Morten Borge, Haaland has co-founded a company called Chess Mates, which now holds a substantial ownership stake in Norway Chess. This strategic partnership marks a notable crossover between two distinct sporting worlds.
The Total Chess World Championship Tour, which has received official approval from FIDE (the International Chess Federation) for a minimum of sixteen years, represents a major development in competitive chess. The ambitious tour plans to host four high-profile tournaments annually across different international cities.
Tournament Structure and Timeline
Players will compete across multiple chess formats including classical, rapid, and blitz to determine an overall world champion. A trial event is scheduled for late 2026, with the full competitive season launching in 2027. The tour will feature an impressive annual prize pool of at least $2.7 million.
Haaland's Vision for Chess Growth
Haaland explained his unexpected interest in chess investment, stating, "Chess is an incredible game. It sharpens your mind, and there are clear similarities to football. You have to think quickly, trust your instincts, and think several moves ahead. Strategy and planning are everything."
The football star elaborated on his investment rationale: "I'm investing in Norway Chess because I believe the new Total Chess World Championship Tour can turn chess into an even bigger sport for spectators around the world. The team behind Norway Chess has already done an impressive job growing the event, and joining the project was too exciting to pass up."
Industry Optimism About Commercial Potential
Chess officials have expressed enthusiasm about Haaland's involvement. Norway Chess CEO Kjell Madland commented, "We expect the new championship to become one of the most prestigious events in the global chess calendar. The fact that Erling is joining us as an investor says a great deal about the commercial potential of this tour."
The investment represents a strategic effort to elevate chess's global profile and spectator appeal, leveraging Haaland's international fame and the proven success of Norway Chess in growing the sport's audience and commercial viability.
