Jallikattu Event in Dindigul Turns Tragic with Fatal Goring Incident
A 24-year-old bull tamer from Alanganallur was fatally gored, and nine other individuals sustained injuries during a jallikattu event held at Pugaiyilaipatti in Dindigul district on Wednesday. The event, organized as part of the St Sandhiyagappar and St Sebastian Church festival, drew significant participation and spectatorship, highlighting both the cultural significance and inherent risks of this traditional sport.
Event Details and Safety Protocols
The jallikattu featured nearly 800 bulls from districts including Dindigul, Theni, Madurai, Virudhunagar, and Sivaganga. Revenue divisional officer Thirumalai flagged off the event at 8:30 am, after which registered tamers took a safety oath. Officials reported that around 400 registered tamers and 800 bulls underwent medical screening before participation, underscoring efforts to adhere to safety guidelines.
Despite these measures, the event saw multiple injuries. Among the injured were bull owners Murugesan and Dharma, tamers Vimal and Arun Pandi, and spectators Sesuraj and Thamizharasan. Most suffered minor injuries, but Thamizharasan was kept under observation at Dindigul Government Hospital due to the severity of his condition.
Fatal Incident and Aftermath
The tragic death occurred when Balaguru, 24, from Alanganallur in Madurai district, was attacked by a bull inside the arena. He suffered fatal injuries and was rushed to Dindigul Government Hospital, where he succumbed during treatment. This incident has raised concerns about the effectiveness of safety protocols at such events.
To manage the large crowd, more than 300 police and security personnel were deployed. However, allegations of security lapses emerged following the fatality. Dindigul district collector S Saravanan denied these claims, stating, "Everything is ensured as per guidelines of the GO, and I clearly instructed the revenue and police departments to comply with conditions fixed by the government."
He emphasized that permission would not be granted if there were gaps in safety arrangements and attributed minor local disturbances to heavy crowding at collection points. The collector assured that safety norms would be strictly enforced in upcoming jallikattu events to prevent similar tragedies.
Rewards and Cultural Context
Despite the incident, the event proceeded with traditional rewards for participants. Successful tamers and owners of unvanquished bulls were awarded prizes, including:

- Bicycles
- Bureaus
- Household appliances
