King Charles III, accompanied by Queen Camilla, will attend the opening ceremony of the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games on July 23, officially inaugurating the scaled-down multi-sport event, organisers announced on Friday.

During the ceremony at The Hydro in Glasgow, the King will read aloud the message he placed into the King's Baton on Commonwealth Day, March 10, 2025, at Buckingham Palace. This act will mark the official declaration that the Games are open.

The 23rd Commonwealth Games will feature over 3,000 athletes from 74 nations and territories competing for 215 gold medals across 10 sports over 11 days, from July 23 to August 2. The programme includes 10 able-bodied disciplines and six para-sports. India is sending 124 athletes to the Games.

Cost-Saving Measures and Event Scale

To reduce costs, the entire event will take place within an eight-mile (12.8 km) radius of Glasgow. Sir Chris Hoy, one of the UK's most decorated athletes, will also participate in the opening ceremony, celebrating sport, the city, and the Commonwealth spirit.

The King's Baton Relay has visited all 74 Commonwealth nations and territories over 500 days, making it the longest relay in Games history. Each nation crafted its own baton reflecting its culture and identity. The relay also promoted the Commonwealth Clean Ocean Plastics Campaign, in partnership with the Royal Commonwealth Society, aiming to prevent one million pieces of plastic from entering Commonwealth waters.

Baton Reunion and Ceremony Highlights

In Glasgow, all 74 batons will be reunited for the first time. The Scotland Baton, handmade in the city from sustainably sourced ash, will be presented to the King so he can read the hidden message. The opening ceremony at The Hydro is expected to be a stunning show reflecting Glasgow's warmth, enterprise, and pride in welcoming the Commonwealth.

Dr. Donald Rukare, President of Commonwealth Sport, said: "We are honoured that Their Majesties The King and Queen will join athletes, fans, delegations and communities from across the Commonwealth for the Opening Ceremony of Glasgow 2026. As the first Commonwealth Games of His Majesty's reign, and the culmination of the first King's Baton Relay, it will be a special occasion for everyone involved in the Commonwealth Games."

He added: "Glasgow 2026 marks the beginning of a new chapter for the Commonwealth Sport Movement. As athletes from 74 nations and territories come together, the Opening Ceremony will set the tone for a Games that celebrates world-class sport, friendship and the unique ability of the Commonwealth Games to bring people together."
