Ludhiana Tennis Court Project Delayed Over Site, Maintenance Issues

Ludhiana's Long-Awaited Tennis Court Project Faces Multiple Hurdles

Ludhiana district, which currently lacks any dedicated sports department or government-owned lawn tennis facilities, saw a new initiative planned in November 2025 to address this gap. The project involved laying synthetic tennis courts at an estimated cost of Rs 77 lakh, alongside another sports development at SCD Government College.

Foundation Laid, But Initial Plans Disrupted

A foundation stone ceremony was conducted to mark the commencement of these projects, attended by a Punjab government minister and various officials. However, the tennis court component quickly encountered a significant obstacle at the originally proposed site within SCD Government College.

The presence of several mature trees at the location created a logistical challenge, forcing authorities to reconsider the venue. Consequently, the project was relocated to Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), where plans were made to reconstruct the existing tennis courts using modern synthetic materials and advanced technology.

New Location Brings Fresh Concerns

At PAU, sports department officials identified a new issue: concerns over the long-term maintenance of the proposed synthetic lawn tennis courts. This development has placed the entire project—already shifted once—on an indefinite hold. Officials are now actively assessing various options and potential solutions to determine the most appropriate and sustainable site for installing the courts.

District Sports Officer (DSO) Kuldeep Chugh explained that the project was initiated in response to persistent demands from city athletes for a proper lawn tennis facility. "The alternative plan was to reconstruct the existing tennis courts at PAU using synthetic material, but issues related to long-term maintenance and other logistical difficulties have also come up," he stated.

Chugh added, "The department is working on the matter, and once a suitable solution and site are finalised, the work will begin."

Parallel Project Proceeds Unhindered

While the tennis court initiative remains stalled, the other sports project launched simultaneously—the construction of indoor volleyball courts at SCD Government College with an estimated budget of around ₹3.5 crore—is moving forward as planned. Sports department officials confirmed that tenders for this project have been finalized, and construction is set to commence shortly at the original site.

Local athletes continue to await the realization of Ludhiana's first dedicated lawn tennis courts, highlighting the ongoing need for enhanced sports infrastructure in the district.
