Maharashtra's Young Boxers Shine with Gold and Silver at U-17 Nationals

Nagpur witnessed a spectacular conclusion to the Under-17 National Boxing Championship at the MLA Hostel on Saturday, as Maharashtra's emerging talents showcased their prowess with a mix of gold and silver medals. The event highlighted the state's strong boxing pipeline, with standout performances across both girls' and boys' categories.

Ovi Adwait Leads the Charge with Gold and Best Boxer Award

In the girls' section, Ovi Adwait emerged as a star, clinching the gold medal in the 50kg final with a composed yet aggressive display. She outpunch SSCB's Naitik in a gripping 4:1 split decision, a verdict that underscored the bout's intensity. Ovi's superior ring craft and tactical discipline were key factors in her victory, earning her the prestigious Best Boxer (Girls) award and capping a standout campaign for Maharashtra.

Gopal Ganeshe Dominates in Boys' Category

Akola's Gopal Ganeshe stamped his authority in the boys' 52kg category with an emphatic 5:0 win over Uttarakhand's Aman. From the opening bell, Gopal pressed forward aggressively, cutting off the ring and landing crisp combinations to keep his opponent on the defensive throughout the bout. Maharashtra's Medal Haul and Team Standings

Maharashtra added to its gold tally through Mamta in the girls' 52kg (light bantam) category, who completely outclassed Haryana's Yanshika with a dominant 5:0 verdict. However, not all bouts ended in victory for the state. Nagpur's Samiksha had to settle for silver after a hard-fought 57kg (featherweight) final, losing 1:4 to SSCB's Navya. Despite showing resilience and matching her opponent punch-for-punch in phases, Samiksha fell short due to Navya's sharper scoring bursts and better finishing in key exchanges.

Similarly, Shanaya in the 63kg category and Avantika in the 48kg category also finished with silver medals after defeats to Haryana's Diya and Uttarakhand's Khushi, respectively. In the team standings, Haryana dominated both sections, clinching the girls' title with 51 points and the boys' crown with 55 points. Maharashtra finished as runners-up in the girls' category with 42 points, while a close fight in the boys' standings saw Uttar Pradesh edge out Maharashtra for third place.

Officials and Coaches Praise Future Prospects

The championship also saw Maharashtra officials earning accolades, with Dinesh Chhapane named Best Judge and Rashmi Jagdish Bhagat adjudged Best Referee. National junior girls coach Jitendra Singh praised the ring craft and mental toughness displayed by players, especially from Maharashtra, signaling a promising future for Indian boxing. Echoing this sentiment, Maharashtra Boxing Association secretary Rakesh Tiwari highlighted that the performances reflect the boxers' hard work and potential to shine on the international stage.

Overall, the Under-17 National Boxing Championship served as a platform for young athletes to demonstrate their skills and determination, with Maharashtra's boxers leaving a lasting impression through their medal-winning efforts and sportsmanship.
