Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya is set to inaugurate a state-of-the-art sports complex worth Rs 132 crore in Meghalaya, marking a significant milestone in the region's sports development. The facility, located in the state capital Shillong, will be opened ahead of the upcoming National Games, providing athletes with world-class amenities.
Facilities and Features
The sports complex spans over 20 acres and includes an indoor stadium with a seating capacity of 5,000, an Olympic-size swimming pool, a synthetic athletics track, and courts for basketball, volleyball, and badminton. Additionally, it houses a modern gymnasium, a sports science center, and accommodation for 200 athletes.
Boost to Local Sports
This infrastructure is expected to nurture local talent and attract national-level competitions to Meghalaya. The complex will also serve as a training hub for athletes preparing for the National Games, which are scheduled to be held later this year.
The project was funded under the Khelo India scheme, which aims to revive sports culture in India. Mandaviya emphasized the government's commitment to promoting sports across the country, especially in the northeastern region.
Local officials and sports bodies have welcomed the development, stating that it will provide a major impetus to sports in Meghalaya and help in identifying and grooming young athletes for international events.
