Jose Mourinho's return to Real Madrid moved a significant step closer on Tuesday after Benfica formally confirmed the departure of the Portuguese coach, while simultaneously ushering in a new era by appointing Marco Silva as his replacement.
The developments come just days after Florentino Perez secured re-election as Real Madrid president until 2030, with Mourinho's return having been one of the centrepieces of his successful campaign. Madrid are now expected to formally confirm Mourinho's appointment on Wednesday, bringing the Portuguese coach back to the Santiago Bernabeu for the first time since leaving the club in 2013.
Benfica Confirm Real Madrid Approach
The decisive breakthrough arrived when Benfica informed Portugal's financial regulator that Madrid had formally activated the process to hire Mourinho. In an official statement, Benfica said: "Real Madrid CF formalized its intention to hire coach Jose Mourinho for the amount of €15,000,000, corresponding to the termination clause of his current sports employment contract, and the coach has given his agreement to this hiring. Thus ended Jose Mourinho's second spell as manager of SL Benfica's professional football team. Sport Lisboa e Benfica wishes Jose Mourinho all the best."
The €15 million compensation package, equivalent to approximately $17 million, will release Mourinho from the two-year contract he signed after returning to Benfica in September 2025. The announcement came shortly after Mourinho's agent Jorge Mendes was spotted meeting Real Madrid director general Jose Angel Sanchez and chief scout Juni Calafat at a hotel in central Madrid, further fuelling expectations that the deal is now entering its final stages.
Mourinho Says Goodbye to Benfica
Following confirmation of his departure, Mourinho issued an emotional farewell message thanking Benfica president Rui Costa, the club's staff and players. "I would like to thank President Rui Costa for the opportunity he gave me to work for Sport Lisboa e Benfica," Mourinho said. "Representing this club has been an honour and a privilege. I would also like to express my gratitude to all the staff at Benfica Campus, whose professionalism, dedication and competence have been exemplary. To the players with whom I have had the pleasure of working, I offer my sincere thanks and my best wishes for every success in their personal and professional lives. I leave with the conviction that, more than just a moment, we have forged a lasting bond: my player for a day, my player for life."
Although his second Benfica spell lasted less than a full season, Mourinho leaves having restored stability and competitiveness. The former Chelsea, Manchester United, Tottenham, Roma and Fenerbahce manager guided Benfica through an extraordinary unbeaten league campaign, recording 23 wins and 11 draws in the Primeira Liga. However, the high number of draws ultimately proved costly as Benfica finished third behind Porto and Sporting despite not losing a single league match. The club also reached the Champions League knockout phase play-offs, where they were eliminated by Real Madrid, while their domestic cup campaigns ended in the Portuguese Cup quarter-finals and League Cup semi-finals. Despite the unbeaten league record, Mourinho's second spell ended without silverware.
Real Madrid Clear the Path by Parting Company with Arbeloa
Madrid have already taken steps to prepare for Mourinho's arrival by confirming the departure of Alvaro Arbeloa. The former defender was appointed first-team coach in January after replacing Xabi Alonso, but failed to reverse the club's decline during a disappointing campaign. Madrid finished a second consecutive season without a major trophy, were knocked out of the Champions League by Bayern Munich and were unable to catch Barcelona in the La Liga title race. In an official statement, the club said: "Real Madrid CF and Alvaro Arbeloa have reached an agreement to end his time as first team coach. Real Madrid is deeply grateful to Alvaro Arbeloa, who throughout his time at the club, from his time in our youth academy, has consistently demonstrated loyalty, commitment, and professionalism. He exemplifies the values of our club. Real Madrid, which will always be his home, wishes Alvaro Arbeloa and his entire family the best of luck in this new stage of their lives." Arbeloa himself had publicly backed Mourinho's return last month, saying he would "be happy to see him back home."
Perez's Election Promises Begin to Take Shape
Mourinho's return was one of several major promises made by Perez during his re-election campaign. The veteran president also pledged significant transfer activity, with Ibrahima Konate and Denzel Dumfries both expected to arrive this summer. Madrid have additionally revealed that they submitted a €150 million (£173.3 million) offer for Atletico Madrid forward Julian Alvarez, although the bid was rejected. The pursuit of a marquee "Galactico" signing formed another key pillar of Perez's election platform as he seeks to restore Madrid to the summit of European football after two trophyless seasons.
Marco Silva Appointed as Mourinho's Replacement
As Mourinho prepares for his return to Spain, Benfica have wasted little time identifying his successor. The Portuguese club announced that Marco Silva has agreed to become their new head coach following the expiration of his Fulham contract. Silva ended a five-year spell at Craven Cottage last week and will now return to Portuguese football for the first time in more than a decade. Benfica confirmed they had "reached an agreement" with the 48-year-old, who is expected to sign a contract running until the end of the 2027-28 season, with an option to extend through to 2028-29. His appointment marks the beginning of a new chapter at the Estadio da Luz just as Mourinho prepares to embark on another at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Back to Where It All Changed
For Mourinho, the move represents a return to the club where he enjoyed some of the most defining moments of his managerial career. During his first spell between 2010 and 2013, he famously challenged Pep Guardiola's dominant Barcelona side, winning La Liga, the Copa del Rey and the Spanish Super Cup while reaching three consecutive Champions League semi-finals. Now, more than a decade later, "The Special One" is poised to return to Madrid once again, tasked with ending the club's recent struggles and delivering on the ambitious promises that helped secure Florentino Perez another term as president.
