Nagpur Teen Vivaan Saraogi Earns IM Norm at Chess Tournament

Nagpur's young chess sensation Vivaan Vijay Saraogi has reignited his promising career trajectory by achieving a significant milestone. The 14-year-old prodigy has successfully secured his maiden norm toward the prestigious International Master (IM) title at the ongoing 16th Odisha Open International Grandmasters Chess Festival in Bhubaneswar.

A Remarkable Tournament Performance

Entering the 10-round tournament ranked 118th, Vivaan demonstrated exceptional skill and composure throughout the competition. After eight rounds, he held a joint third position with an impressive 6 points. According to the regulations established by the International Chess Federation (FIDE), a player must score 6 points in 9 rounds, maintain an average rating above 2333 Elo points, and compete against higher-ranked international opponents to clear the IM norm.

Exceeding All Requirements

Vivaan accomplished this feat with one round to spare, achieving his required points through four victories and four draws. His most notable triumph came against the 9th-seeded Bulgarian Grandmaster Aleksej Aleksandrov, marking a significant upset in the tournament. With a performance rating of 2461 Elo, Vivaan not only met but exceeded all necessary criteria for his first IM norm.

The Path Forward to International Master Title

To secure the full International Master title, Vivaan must now obtain two additional norms and reach a live rating of 2400 Elo. This achievement represents a crucial step in his chess journey, which began when he first learned the game at just five years old.

A Career Temporarily Interrupted

Vivaan's promising career faced an unexpected pause during the two-year pandemic, which disrupted his momentum after he had been on the verge of breaking multiple records. His international success story began in 2018 when he emerged as champion at the 14th Asian Schools Chess Championship in Sri Lanka. The following year, at the same venue, he claimed the Asian Youth Rapid Championship title and accumulated several international medals before the global health crisis.

Post-Pandemic Resurgence

Following the extended break, Vivaan returned to competitive chess with renewed determination. In 2023, he achieved the Candidates Master title while gaining an impressive 288 Elo points. Starting the Odisha GM Open with a rating of 1951 Elo placed him at 118th position, but his exceptional performance rating of 2461 across nine rounds resulted in a substantial gain of 195.2 Elo points.

This recent accomplishment at the Odisha Open International Grandmasters Chess Festival marks a significant comeback for the young Nagpur talent, positioning him as one of India's most promising chess prospects on the international stage.
