The competitive atmosphere reached a fever pitch on Thursday at the 45th National Team Chess Championship (Open) and the 23rd National Women's Team Chess Championship, hosted in Raipur. Organized under the supervision of the Chhattisgarh Pradesh Chess Association and with guidance from the All India Chess Federation, the fifth round of the Open category featured thrilling encounters among India's elite Grandmasters, showcasing strategic depth and resilience.
Open Category: Top Teams Lock Horns in Tense Draws
The highlight of the Open section's fifth round was the fiercely contested match between Telangana A and Railway Sports Promotion Board A (RSPB A), which concluded in a hard-fought 2-2 draw. On the top board, Adireddy Arjun of Telangana, playing with the white pieces, initiated an aggressive Italian Game against GM Visakh N R. Despite Arjun's early offensive, Visakh demonstrated impeccable defensive skills, maintaining equilibrium throughout the middlegame and securing a draw in the endgame.
In another notable game, Pranay Akula faced GM Diptayan Ghosh in a Queen's Gambit Declined. Ghosh, with the black pieces, exhibited superior positional understanding, but Akula's precise endgame technique ensured the match ended in a draw, splitting the point between the players.
Other Key Results in the Open Section
Airports Authority of India (AAI) managed to hold Tamil Nadu B to a 2-2 draw, thanks to victories from IM Aditya Dhingra and IM Nitin S. Meanwhile, RSPB B delivered a commanding performance, defeating Bihar A with a resounding 3.5-0.5 score. This victory was powered by strong showings from IM Ayush Sharma, IM Aronyak Ghosh, IM Neelash Saha, and GM Sayantan Das, highlighting the team's depth and coordination.
Women's Championship: PSPB and AAI Extend Dominance
In the fourth round of the 23rd National Women's Team Chess Championship, Petroleum Sports Promotion Board (PSPB) and Airports Authority of India (AAI) continued their impressive winning streaks, solidifying their positions at the top of the leaderboard.
PSPB achieved a flawless 4-0 clean sweep against Uttar Pradesh, with clinical displays from WGM Mary Ann Gomes, IM Padmini Rout, WFM Arshiya Das, and IM Nisha Mohota. In her match against Ishani Pathak, Mary Ann Gomes employed the Sicilian Defence to gain control of the center, eventually converting her advantage into a win through meticulous endgame technique.
AAI secured a 3-1 victory over Telangana A, with crucial wins from WGM Priyanka Nutakki, WIM Arpita Mukherjee, and WIM Priyanka K. Additionally, Maharashtra A defeated LIC 3-1, and West Bengal A overpowered Andhra Pradesh B with a 3.5-0.5 score, underscoring the competitive spirit across the women's teams.
