NHL Expands Mike Babcock Investigation Amid Oilers Coaching Rumors
NHL Expands Babcock Investigation as Oilers Eye Him

The National Hockey League is reportedly expanding its investigation into former coach Mike Babcock amid fresh allegations, as the Edmonton Oilers consider him for their head coaching vacancy. According to ClutchPoints, league officials are examining additional claims that have surfaced alongside speculation linking Babcock to the Oilers.

Background of the Allegations

Babcock resigned from the Columbus Blue Jackets in September 2023, just months after being hired in July, following allegations that he violated players' privacy by asking to view personal photos on their phones. At the time of his resignation, no formal investigation was conducted. However, reports now indicate that the league has determined the new allegations warrant a broader examination beyond the initial complaints.

Ongoing Investigation

The investigation is being conducted in coordination with the NHL Players' Association and outside investigators. NHL insider Frank Seravalli stated, "If the Oilers elect to continue down the path with Mike Babcock, sources say the NHLPA is in receipt of 'significant' additional claims from their own investigation with players that were not publicly reported in 2023. Those claims were presented to the NHL before his resignation." As a result, the Oilers must wait until the investigation concludes before any hiring decision can be finalized.

Oilers' Interest in Babcock

The Edmonton Oilers are reportedly pursuing Babcock after parting ways with former head coach Kris Knoblauch. According to TSN's Ryan Rishaug, the Oilers' ownership group strongly supports hiring Babcock if possible. "My understanding is there is full-throated support from that leadership group for the Oilers to go ahead and hire Babcock if they can," Rishaug said. NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman has previously indicated interest in carefully evaluating Babcock's conduct before approving any future employment.

Babcock's Coaching Record

Before his tenure with the Blue Jackets, Babcock compiled a 700-418-164 coaching record over 17 NHL seasons and won the Stanley Cup with the Detroit Red Wings in 2008. However, his reputation has been tarnished in recent years by criticism from former players regarding his treatment of athletes and management style.
