Para-Athlete Arrested for Murder of Gold Medallist Chirag Tyagi

In a shocking incident in Ghaziabad, a para-athlete has been arrested for allegedly shooting dead national-level para-athlete and gold medallist Chirag Tyagi. Police suspect that the murder was a revenge killing linked to a complaint over document verification.

Tyagi, 24, a resident of Basantpur Sethli village in Muradnagar, was found dead near Sai Upvan in Ghaziabad on Saturday, according to news agency PTI. The body was discovered in the evening, and police were alerted by locals.

According to family members, Tyagi had recently returned from a training camp in Pune and arrived in Delhi on May 29. They stated that they last spoke to him on Saturday morning when he informed them that he would reach home by the afternoon. However, his mobile phone later became unreachable, causing concern. The family was subsequently informed by police about the tragic incident.

Investigation and Arrest

DCP (City) Dhawal Jaiswal said on Sunday that a preliminary examination of the body and evidence collected from the spot indicated that Tyagi had been shot dead. The post-mortem report confirmed multiple gunshot wounds.

During the investigation, police detained Yash Khatik on Saturday evening. Khatik is also a para-athlete and had previously trained with Tyagi. According to Jaiswal, the investigation revealed that Tyagi had lodged a complaint against Khatik during a document verification process. Following the complaint, Khatik's eligibility was cancelled, which allegedly led to resentment and a desire for revenge.

Police said that during questioning, the accused allegedly confessed to shooting Tyagi with a pistol. The confession was recorded in the presence of witnesses, and legal formalities are being completed.

Recovery of Weapon and Further Steps

Teams have been deployed to recover the weapon used in the crime, while investigators are collecting additional evidence related to the case. Police are also examining mobile phone records and call detail records to establish the sequence of events.

Further legal proceedings are underway, and police said all aspects of the case are being thoroughly investigated. The accused has been remanded to police custody for further interrogation.

The incident has sent shockwaves through the para-athlete community, with many expressing grief and demanding justice for Tyagi. Authorities have assured a fair investigation and swift action.
