Pepe Marti Secures First Formula E Points in Mexico City
Spanish driver Pepe Marti has turned his season around with a strong performance in Mexico City. The Cupra Kiro rookie collected his first Formula E points in just his second race. He finished seventh at the Mexico City E-Prix, marking a significant comeback from a difficult start.
Overcoming Major Penalties
Marti faced a huge challenge heading into the race. He carried a massive 60-place grid penalty from the previous event in Sao Paulo. The penalty resulted from a terrifying crash during his debut race in December. In that incident, his car launched over Jaguar TCS Racing driver Antonio Felix da Costa's vehicle.
Additionally, Marti incurred a Stop/Go penalty for repairs needed after the Sao Paulo accident. Despite these setbacks, he delivered an impressive drive in Round 2. Marti started from the back of the grid but fought his way through the field.
An Unforgettable Experience
After the race, Marti took to Instagram to share his excitement. He posted pictures from the event with a heartfelt caption. "P20 to P7 POINTS IN FORMULA E," he wrote. "Brutal to leave Mexico with my first points on a weekend that seemed lost due to penalties and missing practice sessions."
Marti expressed gratitude to his team, Cupra Kiro, for preparing the car after the Sao Paulo crash. He also thanked the fans for their incredible support. "It was unforgettable!! This is just the beginning, let's go for more!!" he added.
Fan and Official Reactions
Formula E's official Instagram account praised Marti's performance. "What a drive! Vamos!" they commented. Fans also flooded his post with encouraging messages.
One fan recalled how Mexican supporters cheered for Marti even when he was in last place. "Every time you entered the Foro Sol, the fans applauded and shouted to cheer you up!!" the fan wrote. "Mexican fans gave you their heart and full support."
Another fan commented, "Pepe you deserve it!! Great effort for a dream comeback!" A third added, "Exactly where you belong!! More points loading."
Looking Ahead to 2026
In a recent New Year post, Marti reflected on the past year and looked forward to the future. "2025, what a year: end of several chapters and beginning of others," he wrote. "2026, you don't know how eager I am for you to start!!"
Marti now enjoys a three-week break before the next race. The Miami E-Prix, Round 3 of the Formula E season, is scheduled for January 31. This gives him time to prepare and build on his momentum from Mexico City.
The Spanish driver's performance in Mexico City proves his resilience. He beat established drivers like Citroen Racing's Jean-Eric Vergne, Porsche's Nico Mueller, and Nissan's Norman Nato. This result signals a promising start to his Formula E career after early setbacks.
