Madhya Pradesh Para-Swimmer Makes History with Cook Strait Conquest

In an extraordinary display of determination and skill, Padma Shri awardee Satendra Singh from Madhya Pradesh has achieved a monumental feat in the world of para-swimming. On Thursday, he successfully crossed New Zealand's Cook Strait, widely regarded as one of the most challenging sea routes globally, completing the 22-kilometer swim in an impressive 9 hours and 42 minutes.

From Rejection to Record-Breaking Achievement

Satendra Singh's journey to this historic moment began with rejection. In 2016, he was denied permission to swim in Bhopal's Upper Lake, an experience that could have ended his aquatic aspirations. Instead, it ignited a fierce passion for long-distance swimming that would propel him to international waters and record-breaking accomplishments.

The Gwalior resident, who has 70% disability and cannot use his legs, transformed that initial disappointment into unwavering determination. "I never gave up," he said with a smile, reflecting on his journey that has now culminated in this remarkable Cook Strait achievement.

National and International Recognition

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav extended heartfelt congratulations to Singh, calling the feat historic in a post on X. "Padma Shri and Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Awardee, Madhya Pradesh's international para swimmer Shri @SatendraSLohiya, has created history by successfully crossing New Zealand's Cook Strait," the CM stated. "With this remarkable achievement, he becomes the first para swimmer from Asia to conquer the Cook Strait."

Yadav emphasized that this proud moment for both the nation and Madhya Pradesh reflects Singh's indomitable spirit and unwavering determination, which will continue to inspire generations to come.

A Journey of Perseverance and Previous Accomplishments

Satendra Singh's Cook Strait conquest adds to an already impressive list of achievements:

  • English Channel crossing in 2018
  • Catalina Channel in the United States in 2019
  • North Channel in 2022

He is already a Limca Book of Records holder and became the first para-athlete from Asia to successfully complete both the English and Catalina Channel swims. Remarkably, he was initially denied permission to swim the English Channel in 2017 but returned a year later to successfully complete it.

Overcoming Challenges and Weather Obstacles

Singh reached New Zealand on January 18 with plans to attempt the Cook Strait crossing that month, but unfavorable weather conditions forced a postponement. "I didn't want to go empty-handed," he explained. "I am happy that I managed to achieve it today."

Speaking to media on the phone, Singh expressed gratitude to those who supported him throughout his journey. "I am grateful to everyone who supported me," he said. "Vinod Agarwal of Balaji, Philips Rush in New Zealand and CM Mohan Yadav encouraged me at every stage of my life."

Inspiring Message from a Government Employee

A government employee posted in Indore who received the Vikram Award in 2014, Singh has a powerful message for others facing challenges. "I want to convey one message," he emphasized. "Anyone can achieve wonders if they put their heart into it."

His achievement has brought national and international acclaim to Madhya Pradesh, showcasing how perseverance can transform obstacles into opportunities for greatness.
