Saurav Ghosal Takes on Key Role as Sports Commissioner for World Premier Squash
In a significant development for the global squash community, World Premier Squash (WPS) has announced the appointment of Saurav Ghosal as its Sports Commissioner. This strategic move brings one of the sport's most decorated and respected figures into a senior leadership position as the league prepares for its highly anticipated debut in August 2026.
A Legendary Career and Leadership Pedigree
Saurav Ghosal's appointment is backed by an illustrious career spanning over two decades at the pinnacle of professional squash. He holds the distinction of being the only male player from India to ever break into the Top 10 of the PSA World Rankings. His remarkable achievements include securing 11 professional titles and an impressive haul of 9 medals at the Asian Games.
Beyond his on-court success, Ghosal brings substantial administrative experience to the role. He previously served as the Men's President of the Professional Squash Association (PSA) and as the co-Chair of the joint Athletes Commission of the PSA and World Squash, the sport's global governing bodies. This unique blend of elite athletic performance and governance expertise positions him ideally to shape the future of the new league.
Defining the Sporting Framework for a New Era
As the Sports Commissioner for World Premier Squash, Ghosal will be responsible for establishing and overseeing the league's complete sporting framework. This encompasses critical areas such as the competition format, player qualification pathways, and officiating standards. His deep understanding of the sport's nuances and commitment to innovation with integrity will be central to the league's development.
Adi K Mishra, Founder & CEO of the Future of Sports Platform, emphasized the significance of this appointment. "Saurav has spent over two decades competing at the summit of this sport. He understands the nuances of the sport and the need to innovate with integrity. As World Premier Squash builds at the intersection of elite competition and technology-driven participation, his leadership is the foundation we want to build on," Mishra stated.
Revolutionizing Access with AI-Driven Pathways
A cornerstone of the World Premier Squash initiative is its commitment to democratizing access to elite competition. The league will feature a total of 24 players, including reserves. While 8 spots are reserved for established elite professionals, up to 16 positions will be filled through a groundbreaking, merit-based qualification system.
This system leverages multi-modal artificial intelligence on the edge, hosted on the Future of Sports Platform (FSP). Through AI-enabled challenges, aspiring players from anywhere in the world can compete for a place in the league. This innovative approach eliminates traditional barriers, requiring no agent, no prior ranking history, and no geographical restrictions, offering a direct pathway to the sport's highest levels.
Saurav Ghosal commented on this visionary approach, saying, "The best squash players in the world came through communities, clubs and courts far from the spotlight. World Premier Squash honours that by using AI-enabled challenges on the FSP platform to connect every corner of the global squash family, and giving the sport's next great player, wherever they are, a genuine path to the top."
A Sport at a Historic Crossroads
Ghosal's appointment coincides with a transformative period for squash globally. The sport is set to make its long-awaited Olympic debut at the LA28 Olympic and Paralympic Games. This milestone is catalyzing increased global investment, surging participation rates, and renewed commercial interest across the squash ecosystem.
The launch of World Premier Squash in August 2026 is poised to capitalize on this momentum, offering a new, high-profile platform for the sport's athletes and fans. With Saurav Ghosal at the helm of its sporting operations, the league aims to set new standards for competition, inclusivity, and innovation in professional squash.
