The Indira Gandhi Municipal Stadium in Vijayawada is poised for a significant transformation, with a groundbreaking ceremony for extensive modernization works scheduled for Wednesday. This ambitious project aims to elevate the stadium to meet international benchmarks, enhancing sports infrastructure across Andhra Pradesh.
Phased Upgrades with Substantial Funding
According to Sports Authority of Andhra Pradesh (SAAP) chairman A Ravi Naidu, the stadium will undergo upgrades in phases. The Central government has already sanctioned Rs 19 crore, while the first phase alone is estimated to cost approximately Rs 60 crore. Officials anticipate completing this initial phase within six months, marking a rapid advancement in the state's sports facilities.
Collaborative Efforts and Infrastructure Enhancements
The modernization will be a joint venture involving the Centre, SAAP, and the municipal corporation. Key improvements in the first phase include:
- Development of synthetic running tracks to support athletics training and competitions.
- Construction of two basketball courts to cater to growing interest in the sport.
- Upgrades to player facilities and overall sports infrastructure to accommodate larger sporting events.
This redevelopment is part of broader initiatives to strengthen sports infrastructure in Andhra Pradesh, with authorities exploring additional central projects in the sector.
High-Profile Groundbreaking Ceremony
The groundbreaking ceremony is expected to attract prominent figures, including Sports Minister Mandipalli Ramprasad Reddy, MP Kesineni Sivanath, and local MLAs. Prior to the event, SAAP vice chairman and managing director S Bharani, along with officials, conducted an inspection of the stadium premises to review arrangements and ensure a smooth commencement of works.
