The city of Vijayawada is poised for a significant transformation in its sports landscape as the Indira Gandhi Municipal Stadium launches an ambitious Rs 60 crore redevelopment project. This initiative aims to elevate the stadium to the high standards required for hosting the National Games, marking a pivotal moment for local athletic infrastructure.

Groundbreaking Ceremony Marks Start of Long-Awaited Project

On Wednesday, the long-awaited redevelopment works officially commenced with a groundbreaking ceremony attended by key dignitaries. State Sports Minister Mandipalli Ramprasad Reddy, SAAP Chairman Animini Ravi Naidu, MP Kesineni Sivanath, and local MLAs were present to inaugurate the project. The event symbolizes a new chapter in enhancing Vijayawada's sports facilities, driven by a collaborative effort between the Sports Authority of Andhra Pradesh and the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation, under the supervision of SHAP.

Funding and Execution Details

The Rs 60 crore project is financially supported by the Khelo India scheme, with Rs 20 crore sanctioned by the Central Government. The remaining Rs 40 crore will be contributed by state authorities and the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation. Execution will proceed in three distinct phases, each designed to develop world-class amenities that cater to both athletes and spectators.

Phase-Wise Development Plans

Phase One: Currently underway along Bandaru Road, this initial stage includes the construction of a football green field, four tennis courts, two volleyball courts, two basketball courts, and handball courts. Additionally, modern 400-meter and 200-meter synthetic athletic tracks will be installed to ensure the stadium meets competitive standards for various sports events.

Phase Two: This phase will focus on developing a state-of-the-art multipurpose indoor stadium, providing versatile space for indoor sports and activities, further enhancing the venue's capability to host diverse events.

Phase Three: The final stage will incorporate administrative blocks, a fully equipped gymnasium, and a physiotherapy centre dedicated to athlete support and rehabilitation, ensuring comprehensive facilities for training and recovery.
