Orleans Masters: Ayush Shetty's Campaign Ends in Round of 16

Indian badminton player Ayush Shetty has been eliminated from the Orleans Masters tournament in France, suffering a defeat in the round of 16 on Friday. The 20-year-old shuttler lost to Japan's Yudai Okimoto in straight games, with scores of 18-21 and 9-21, as reported by ESPN.

Shetty's Struggles Continue in 2026 Season

Despite being the 2025 US Open champion, Ayush Shetty is yet to secure a title this year. His performance in the 2026 season has been inconsistent, with his best finish being a second-round appearance at the Malaysian Open. All other tournaments have seen him exit in the first round, highlighting a challenging period for the young athlete.

Indian Contingent Still in the Fray

While Shetty's exit is a setback, India's hopes at the Orleans Masters remain strong with three quarterfinal matches scheduled. In women's singles, an all-Indian clash is set between Isharani Baruah and Malvika Bansod. Bansod, who has not progressed beyond the round of 16 this year, achieved her best result at the Indian Open in Delhi back in January. She advanced to the quarterfinals by defeating Malaysia's Wong Ling Ching with scores of 24-22 and 13-21.

Tanvi Sharma Aims for Breakthrough

Another Indian shuttler, Tanvi Sharma, will face Japan's Natsuki Nidaira in the women's singles quarterfinals. Sharma is seeking her first quarterfinal spot in the 2026 calendar year after experiencing four consecutive first-round exits. She earned her place by defeating fellow Indian Anmol Kharb in straight games, 21-14 and 21-17, following a notable victory over second seed Supanida Katethong of Thailand on the opening day.

Men's Doubles Team Advances

In the men's doubles competition, the Indian pair of Hariharan Amasakarunan and MR Arjun have secured a spot in the quarterfinals. They defeated Scotland's Alexander Dunn and Adam Pringle in a match that lasted 35 minutes, winning 26-24 and 21-14. Next, they will take on the Indonesian duo of Leo Rolly Carnando and Bagas Maulana.

The tournament continues with Indian players aiming to make a mark in the later stages, showcasing the depth of talent in the country's badminton circuit.
