Devika Sihag Secures Maiden Super 300 Title at Thailand Masters with Dominant Performance
In a remarkable display of skill and composure, Devika Sihag, the 20-year-old shuttler from Hansi, Punjab, has claimed her first Super 300 title at the Thailand Masters. Standing tall at 172 cm, Devika showcased an impeccable run throughout the tournament, not dropping a single set en route to the championship. Her victory came after opponent Goh Jin Wei of Malaysia retired due to injury, with the scoreline at 21-8, 6-3 in Devika's favor.
A Flawless Week of Badminton Excellence
Devika's path to the title was nothing short of spectacular. She upset two seeded players, including the top seed Supanida Katethong, and defeated fifth seed Huang Yu-Hsun of Taiwan in the semifinals. Her performance was characterized by a fluid attacking style, leveraging her height to execute powerful smashes and precise drops. Coached by former national champion Sayali Gokhale, Devika displayed a newfound confidence and tactical acumen, particularly in finishing sets strongly from the 15-point mark onwards.
Overcoming Challenges and Building Momentum
Despite persistent knee patella issues and a season marred by niggles and low confidence, Devika turned her fortunes around in Thailand. Her strategy against Goh Jin Wei involved making the Malaysian shuttler, ranked No. 68, move extensively, exploiting her discomfort in movement. Devika's effective serving and shot placement, including straight smashes and cross drops, proved too much for her opponent. According to her academy coach Sagar Chopda, this victory was a result of consistent aggression and a calm attitude, marking a long-awaited realization of her potential.
Historical Significance and Future Prospects
Thailand has been a favorable venue for Indian badminton stars, with players like Kidambi Srikanth and the duo of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty achieving their first notable titles here. Devika, who trains in Bangalore and has served as a sparring partner for PV Sindhu under coaches Irwansyah and Vimal Kumar, aims to build on this breakthrough. Her attacking prowess, reminiscent of Sindhu's style, positions her as a promising challenger to top names in the coming years.
This title not only boosts Devika's career but also highlights the growing depth in Indian badminton, with young talents making their mark on the international stage.
