India Open 2026 Faces Scathing Criticism Over Poor Organization and Conditions

Congress Rajya Sabha MP and Senior Advocate Abhishek Singhvi and Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi launched sharp attacks on the organizers and government. They highlighted serious mismanagement issues at the ongoing India Open 2026 badminton tournament in New Delhi.

Incidents Disrupt Tournament Proceedings

On Thursday, the tournament faced embarrassing disruptions. Bird droppings fell on the playing floor, halting matches. This marked the second such incident, following earlier reports of monkeys appearing in the stands.

These problems compounded existing concerns. Danish player Mia Blichfeldt had already raised alarms about playing conditions. World No.3 Anders Antonsen withdrew from the tournament, citing very poor air quality in Delhi.

Lawmakers Voice Strong Disapproval on Social Media

Priyanka Chaturvedi took to X to express her dismay. She pointed out the lack of proper infrastructure at the BWF India Open 2026. Her post questioned India's preparedness for hosting larger events like the Olympics.

"Bird droppings halting international badminton matches. Monkeys sighted in the stands. International players withdrawing from the tournament in Delhi due to air pollution while some players speak about lack of proper infrastructure. It is all happening at the India Open Super 750 in Delhi," Chaturvedi wrote.

Abhishek Singhvi also criticized the conditions on X. He stressed the need for professional administration rather than makeshift arrangements for international events.

"Bird droppings halting international matches. Monkeys in the stands. Players choking on pollution. This is not satire, this is the India Open Super 750 in the national capital. If we want to host the world, we must stop embarrassing ourselves before it. World-class sport needs world-class governance, not jugaad," Singhvi stated.

Badminton World Federation Responds to Concerns

The Badminton World Federation addressed the situation on Thursday. Officials said they discussed conditions with players and teams. They acknowledged receiving both positive and constructive feedback about the venue.

The federation recognized challenges posed by haze and cold weather. However, they noted the Indira Gandhi Sports Complex represents a significant improvement over previous venues.

Cleanliness issues and animal control matters fell under the responsibility of the Badminton Association of India. The federation stated that feedback from this event would guide future improvements.

Broader Implications for Indian Sports Hosting

These incidents raise important questions about India's capacity to organize major international sporting events. The criticism comes at a time when India has expressed ambitions to host larger competitions.

Chaturvedi's reference to Olympic hosting plans underscores the stakes. Proper infrastructure and management become crucial when aspiring to welcome global athletes.

The ongoing tournament continues amidst these controversies. Players and spectators alike hope for smoother proceedings in the coming days.
