The Indian men's doubles badminton pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty have officially withdrawn from the Indonesia Open 2026 tournament. The decision came following an injury sustained by Satwiksairaj Rankireddy during their first-round match. The duo had to retire mid-match against Malaysia's Aaron Tai and Kang Khai Xing on Wednesday.
Official Confirmation from BAI
The Badminton Association of India (BAI) released a statement on Wednesday confirming the withdrawal. The statement read: "Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty have withdrawn from the POLYTRON Indonesia Open 2026 due to the former's injury. The pair will now focus on recovery and rehabilitation as they prepare for the important tournaments ahead. We wish Satwik a speedy recovery and look forward to seeing the duo back on court soon."
Recent Form and Singapore Open Victory
The withdrawal comes as a setback for the Indian pair, who arrived in Jakarta with strong momentum. Just last week, they clinched the men's doubles title at the Singapore Open, ending a two-year drought on the BWF World Tour. Their victory in Singapore marked their first World Tour triumph since the Thailand Open two years ago. In the final, they staged a remarkable comeback against Indonesia's Fajar Alfian and Muhammad Fikri, winning 18-21, 21-17, 21-16 in 73 minutes. This made them the first Indian doubles combination to win the Singapore Open.
Impact on India's Campaign
With the withdrawal of Satwik and Chirag, India's hopes at the Indonesia Open now rest on singles players Lakshya Sen, HS Prannoy, Ayush Shetty, and Kidambi Srikanth. The only remaining doubles pair is MR Arjun and Hariharan Amsakarunan. In the women's singles, PV Sindhu, Unnati Hooda, and Malvika Bansod are leading the charge. The women's doubles category features Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand, while the mixed doubles includes Rohan Kapoor and Ruthvika Shivani Gadde, as well as Dhruv Kapila and Tanisha Crasto.
The Indian contingent will be hoping for strong performances from the remaining players as they continue their campaign in Jakarta.
