DHARAMSHALA: Arshdeep Singh appeared uncharacteristically subdued during a practice session here on Saturday afternoon. On the eve of a crucial match against table-toppers Royal Challengers Bengaluru, the India left-arm seamer skipped his usual banter with teammates for intense discussions with head coach Ricky Ponting.
Physical struggles behind poor form
Andrew Leipus, Punjab Kings' head of sports science, revealed that Arshdeep has been dealing with physical restrictions that may explain his inconsistent performances. "We've been working together and looking at his body for any restrictions that might cause his performances to be up and down. We think we've hit on a bit of a winner there. He's been feeling a lot better in the last couple of weeks, physically," Leipus told Times of India.
This revelation sheds light on why Arshdeep's deliveries have lacked their usual zip, and why he has struggled to nail yorkers or bouncers in crunch situations, unlike in previous seasons.
Off-field distractions?
Leipus acknowledged the chatter around Arshdeep's off-field activities, including vlogging, but insisted that the pacer remains calm and focused in the dressing room. "In terms of his behaviour and attitude, Arsh is pretty much a flat line. He's not up or down. He gives his best out there. He's a very loud person in the dressing room. That hasn't changed," Leipus said. He added that while phones are not an issue within the team environment, outside distractions could be a concern that needs addressing.
Looking for inspiration
If Arshdeep needs motivation, he can look at the opposition dugout, which features veterans like Virat Kohli and Bhuvneshwar Kumar, both 37, who continue to reinvent themselves. Leipus praised captain Shreyas Iyer and Arshdeep for their calm leadership during this rough phase.
Punjab Kings, who started the tournament strongly, have slid down the standings, with Arshdeep's form a major factor. The team will hope for a turnaround in Sunday's match.
