Ashwin Lauds Shreyas Iyer's Evolution as Punjab Kings' Trusted Leader
Ashwin Praises Shreyas Iyer's Growth as Punjab Kings Captain

Ashwin Applauds Shreyas Iyer's Transformative Leadership for Punjab Kings

Former India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has offered glowing praise for Punjab Kings skipper Shreyas Iyer, emphasizing his significant evolution over the past two years. Ashwin observes that Iyer has matured into a captain who commands trust and respect from his teammates, attributing this growth to his distinctive leadership approach and unwavering batting consistency, which have been pivotal in driving Punjab's achievements.

Iyer's Leadership Journey and Impactful Performances

Iyer's captaincy journey gained substantial attention last season when he guided PBKS to their first IPL final in over a decade. His memorable unbeaten knock of 87 runs off just 41 balls against Mumbai Indians in Qualifier 2 not only demonstrated his batting prowess but also highlighted his ability to excel under intense pressure. This victory marked a historic moment as Punjab Kings successfully chased a target exceeding 200 runs against Mumbai for the first time in IPL history.

Continuing that momentum into the current season, Iyer has led Punjab Kings to an impressive start with four wins in five matches, alongside one washout. This strong performance has positioned PBKS at the top of the IPL 2026 points table, showcasing the team's competitive edge under his guidance.

Fostering a 'Brotherhood' Culture Within the Team

Ashwin pinpointed Iyer's greatest strength as captain lies in the inclusive environment he has cultivated. "Just the comfort that he is creating around the team, to say, we will have a brotherly conversation. It's a brotherhood here. At the end of the day, I have played in teams where there is always that layer that you can't... You are just not able to go up to the captain or the coach and say, 'I will deliver this for you'. And it's happened," Ashwin remarked during ESPNcricinfo's TimeOut programme.

"Just the fact that he has kept it simple like how it is being done in your gully or in your tennis-ball game back home, where we do this all the time with our captain or with our friend. That atmosphere is amazing. And I think the way he is batting, he is growing into the role of a leader that the players are looking up to, which is a lethal combination," Ashwin added, underscoring the synergy between Iyer's batting form and his leadership qualities.

Batting Excellence Strengthening Captaincy Credentials

Iyer's exceptional batting performance this season has further solidified his captaincy role. The right-handed batsman has amassed 203 runs in five matches, boasting a blistering strike rate of 187.96. His recent innings include scores of 50, 69 not out, and 66, reflecting his consistency and ability to anchor the team's batting lineup.

According to Ashwin, Iyer's presence at the crease has become intimidating for bowlers. "His sheer presence (at the crease) is terrifying the bowlers in many ways. And how has he done that? His appetite to be able to upskill himself is sensational. I've played cricket for quite an amount of time. I've interacted with a lot of cricketers, not many have the appetite to be able to leave what they're good at and explore areas where they're weak. You would have seen a lot of careers pan out where people have not worked on their weaknesses at all," he concluded, highlighting Iyer's dedication to self-improvement.

Ashwin's insights underscore how Iyer's blend of tactical acumen, batting prowess, and team-building skills is shaping Punjab Kings into a formidable unit in the IPL 2026 season.
