The Houston Astros are entering a crucial stretch of the season, with trade speculation intensifying around the team. Injuries, inconsistent performances, and a challenging position in the standings have raised questions about the front office's strategy ahead of the MLB trade deadline. While Houston still has time to reverse its fortunes, some insiders suggest the club may consider selling if results do not improve soon.
Insider Insights on Potential Moves
MLB insider Ken Rosenthal recently discussed the Astros' situation on FOX Sports: MLB. According to Rosenthal, Houston is unlikely to trade superstar Yordan Alvarez, but several other key players could become trade candidates if the team falls further behind in the playoff race. These comments have drawn attention because the Astros have been one of baseball's most competitive teams in recent years, making the idea of selling seem unusual for the organization.
Isaac Paredes, Josh Hader, and Christian Walker Emerge as Possible Trade Candidates
Ken Rosenthal identified Isaac Paredes as the most realistic trade option if Houston decides to sell. "Isaac Paredes, he would be the most obvious if they are out of contention," Rosenthal said via FOX Sports: MLB. Paredes could attract significant interest due to his power bat and defensive versatility across multiple infield positions. Teams seeking extra offense for a playoff push may view him as a valuable asset.
Rosenthal also mentioned Josh Hader and Christian Walker as players who could draw league-wide attention. However, he explained that trades involving these two might not be straightforward. "Josh Hader and Christian Walker, they would be two others who would draw interest, but both have really high salaries. So that would limit the returns and Hader also has a full no-trade clause," Rosenthal noted. Despite these challenges, teams in need of bullpen help or veteran leadership could still contact Houston if the Astros are open to offers.
Jeremy Pena Could Be an Important Offseason Decision
Rosenthal also highlighted another name tied to Houston's future plans. He believes Jeremy Pena could become an offseason trade candidate due to his contract situation. "And then this is the one to keep in mind, maybe not so much for the deadline but the offseason, Jeremy Pena," Rosenthal added. "Jeremy Pena is an eligible free agent after next season, after 2027. So come this offseason, he will be in the same position Kyle Tucker was a few months back, and remember what they did with Kyle Tucker, they traded him."
The Astros are still striving to stay in the playoff race, complicating the situation. Houston remains near the bottom of the American League West standings, but the Wild Card race is close enough for the team to remain hopeful. The next few weeks will be critical for the organization. If the Astros begin winning consistently, they may look to add talent rather than move players. However, if the struggles persist, trade discussions around the roster could intensify before the deadline.
