Axar Patel Criticizes IPL's Impact Player Rule, Says It Devalues All-Rounders
Axar Patel Slams IPL Impact Player Rule for Hurting All-Rounders

Axar Patel Voices Displeasure with IPL's Impact Player Rule Ahead of 2026 Season

In a candid pre-season press conference, Delhi Capitals skipper Axar Patel has openly criticized the Indian Premier League's Impact Player rule, stating he is personally not a fan of the regulation. With the IPL 2026 season set to commence on March 28, Patel's remarks highlight growing concerns about how this rule affects team dynamics and player roles.

Impact Player Rule Diminishes All-Rounder Value, Says Patel

Introduced in 2023, the Impact Player rule allows teams to substitute a specialist batter or bowler during a match, a move intended to add strategic depth. However, Axar Patel believes this has significantly altered team combinations to the detriment of all-rounders. "I don't like this rule, honestly, because I am an all-rounder," he admitted. "Earlier, you would pick an all-rounder for batting and bowling. But because of this rule, the team management goes for a particular batsman or bowler, thinking 'Why do we need an all-rounder?' Since I am an all-rounder, I don't like the rule."

Despite his personal reservations, Patel acknowledged that rules must be followed. "At the same time, rules are rules and we need to follow them. From a personal point of view though, I don't like the rule," he added, emphasizing his commitment to team protocols while expressing his dissent.

Historical Context and Previous Concerns

This is not the first instance where Axar Patel has raised issues with the Impact Player rule. Back in 2024, while serving as vice-captain, he noted that the regulation impacted his batting position, suggesting a pattern of disruption for all-rounders. His latest comments come as Delhi Capitals prepare to kick off their IPL 2026 campaign against Lucknow Super Giants at the Ekana Cricket Stadium on April 1.

Injury Explains 2025 Bowling Struggles, Not Rule

Patel also addressed his challenging bowling performance in the 2025 IPL season, where he conceded runs at 8.5 per over and managed only five wickets in 11 innings—his least effective since joining Delhi in 2019. He clarified that these struggles were due to a finger injury sustained during India's victorious 2025 Champions Trophy campaign, not the Impact Player rule.

"The 2025 Champions Trophy was right before the IPL. During CT, my spinning finger sustained a cut: when I was bowling, because of the seam of the ball, it kept getting cut further. It turned into a deep cut. Because of that, I couldn't put pressure and rotation on the ball," he explained. "I was bowling less because of that and was thinking of bowling only wherever needed and saving my finger. After seven matches, when my finger healed, I resumed bowling. It was not because of the Impact Player rule."

Batting Success Offsets Bowling Dip in 2025

While his bowling numbers dipped, Axar Patel compensated with an impressive batting performance in the 2025 season. He scored 263 runs in 11 innings at a strike rate of 158, including four scores above 30, and maintained a strike rate of 159 in the middle overs to provide crucial momentum for Delhi Capitals. This highlights his versatility and resilience as a key player, despite the challenges posed by the rule and injury.

As the IPL 2026 approaches, Patel's critique sparks broader discussions on how regulations like the Impact Player rule might reshape team strategies and player valuations in one of cricket's premier tournaments.
