Delhi's Ayush Badoni Credits Bowling Evolution for Maiden India ODI Call-Up
Badoni: Bowling Focus Earned Me India ODI Call-Up

Delhi cricketer Ayush Badoni believes a strategic shift to bowling two years ago marked a pivotal moment in his career. This evolution into an all-rounder paved the way for his maiden call-up to the Indian cricket team.

From Delhi Captain to National Contender

The 26-year-old received his India ODI selection under dramatic circumstances. He joined the squad for the ongoing three-match series against New Zealand after Washington Sundar sustained an injury following the opening match.

Badoni learned about his selection while preparing with the Delhi team for a quarter-final clash against Vidarbha. "I was with the Delhi team, serving as captain," Badoni recalled. "Our next day match was the quarter-finals. That's when I got to know about it."

He immediately shared the news with his roommate Priyansh, suggesting he might need to take over captaincy duties. "That was a great feeling," Badoni admitted. "I feel very grateful and happy that I got this opportunity."

Family Reactions and Team Welcome

The cricketer received the call late at night, delaying his ability to inform family and friends. "It was announced in the morning, that's when they got to know," he explained. "They were also very happy and proud."

Badoni found the national team environment welcoming and familiar. "All the coaches and players were very welcoming to me," he noted. "I've played with and against most of them, so it was nice to meet everyone again."

The Bowling Transformation

Badoni emphasized how expanding his skill set proved crucial for his selection. "Preparation was very clear," he stated. "Earlier, I used to bat, but since the last two years, I've been focusing a lot on my bowling."

The Delhi player developed genuine confidence in his bowling abilities. "I always feel that I can take wickets and contribute to the team with my bowling," Badoni asserted. "So I got the benefit of being an all-rounder. I've bowled a lot for Delhi, taken wickets, and benefited from it."

Learning from Legends

Sharing the dressing room with established players provides valuable learning opportunities. "A lot of the seniors in our team are legends in a way," Badoni observed. "I try to learn from them when I bat or bowl. I feel that it enhances my game."

The cricketer enjoys familiar company within the squad. "I've known Harshit because he plays for Delhi," he mentioned. "I have a lot of fun with Arshdeep and Shreyas too. It's a lot of fun to be with them."

Series Context and Future Prospects

The ODI series against New Zealand stands evenly poised at 1-1. The decisive third match will take place at Holkar Stadium in Indore on Sunday.

While Badoni did not feature in the playing eleven for the second ODI, which India lost, he remains hopeful for future opportunities. His recent form and all-round capabilities position him as a potential impact player at the international level.

Badoni's journey from Delhi captain to national squad member demonstrates how strategic skill development can open doors at the highest level of cricket. His story highlights the importance of versatility in modern cricket.
