Balaji Urges KKR to Bat Rahane at Number Three for IPL Success
Balaji: Rahane Should Bat at No. 3 for KKR in IPL

Balaji Advocates for Rahane's Number Three Spot in KKR Batting Order

As the Indian Premier League (IPL) season approaches, former Indian fast bowler Lakshmipathy Balaji has voiced a strong opinion on the ideal batting position for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) captain Ajinkya Rahane. Balaji insists that Rahane should not bat lower than number three, emphasizing his past success in that role.

Strategic Top-Four Proposal for KKR

Speaking on JioHotstar's 'Game Plan - Know Your Team', Balaji outlined a compelling top-four batting lineup for the three-time IPL champions. He suggested opening with the New Zealand duo of Finn Allen and Tim Seifert, followed by Rahane at number three and Cameron Green at number four. "I always feel that KKR skipper Ajinkya Rahane should bat in the top order. He shouldn't bat at anything less than number three," Balaji stated.

He highlighted Rahane's impressive performance with Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at number three, where he scored significant runs. "He has done phenomenally well with CSK at number three and scored a lot of runs. So, he batting one down would be good for both, him and KKR," Balaji added. For Green, batting at number four would allow him time to settle before accelerating, leveraging his experience as a number four batter for Australia, where he has 347 runs in nine innings at a strike rate of 162.14.

Rahane's Recent Form and Team Dynamics

In the previous IPL season, Rahane amassed 390 runs in 12 innings at an average of 35.45 and a strike rate of 147.72, including three half-centuries, all while batting at number three for KKR. Balaji stressed that KKR's top order must elevate their game this season, especially after not retaining key players from their 2024 title-winning squad, such as Phil Salt and former captain Shreyas Iyer.

"Somebody needs to step in now. Probably, Cameron Green or Finn Allen. And of course, you have a young talent like Angkrish Raghuvanshi. Their time has come now. If they do well, KKR will get massive momentum," Balaji concluded, underscoring the importance of these players in driving the team's success.

KKR's Upcoming Campaign and Squad Overview

KKR will kick off their IPL 2026 campaign with a highly anticipated match against five-time champions Mumbai Indians (MI) in Mumbai on March 29. The team boasts a diverse squad with multiple opening options, including Rahane, Raghuvanshi, Sunil Narine, Seifert, and Allen. The full squad for IPL 2026 features notable acquisitions like Cameron Green (Rs 25.20 Cr), Finn Allen (Rs 2 Cr), and Tim Seifert (Rs 1.50 Cr), among others.

Balaji's insights come at a crucial time as KKR strategizes for the new season, aiming to build on past successes and address gaps in their batting lineup. His recommendation for Rahane's batting position could play a pivotal role in shaping the team's approach and performance in the upcoming matches.
