Bangladesh Cricket Board Seeks Shakib Al Hasan's Return for Long-Term Plan

The newly appointed chairman of selectors for the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), Habibul Bashar, has made a significant statement regarding the future of veteran all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan. On Tuesday, Bashar expressed his strong desire for the 39-year-old cricketer to return to Bangladesh and continue his international career for at least two more years, with a specific focus on the 2027 ODI World Cup.

Political Changes and Shakib's Absence

Shakib Al Hasan had relocated to the United States following the removal of the Awami League government led by Sheikh Hasina in 2024, which came after a student uprising. The interim government that followed had imposed a ban on Shakib representing Bangladesh in international cricket. With a new government now established in the country, the cricketing landscape has shifted, opening possibilities for his return.

Bashar indicated that while the selection panel is open to welcoming Shakib back, this would not happen immediately. He clarified that there is insufficient time to consider him for the upcoming home white-ball series against New Zealand, which is scheduled to begin on April 17.

Emphasis on Preparation and Long-Term Commitment

"There is not much time left before the New Zealand series and I am not sure how much cricket Shakib has been involved with. From what I know about him, he is not a guy who will come tomorrow and play the day after," Bashar stated in an interview with Cricbuzz.

He emphasized that Shakib requires adequate preparation and that the decision should not be driven by emotion. "He needs preparation too. It's not a place of emotion. Definitely if we are thinking about Shakib, we will think in the long-term," Bashar added.

While Shakib has previously expressed a wish to play his final Test match on home soil, Bashar's focus is on a more extended plan rather than a brief comeback. "I don't think about Shakib coming for a single series and then leaving. If we can get service from him, we will want that he provides that for a long time. In that regard, preparation is very important," he explained.

Strategic Planning for the 2027 ODI World Cup

Bashar confirmed that Shakib is definitely in the selectors' plans, but stressed the importance of a structured approach. "First things first, he is definitely in the plans. You see there are talks about him in regards to the New Zealand series which is why I want him to come prepared for a longer time. I think he still has two years," he said.

He elaborated on his vision for Shakib's role in the national team, targeting the 2027 ODI World Cup as a key milestone. "I want him for the longer term, at least to have that plan where he can play the 2027 World Cup. So my plans are not for one series," Bashar affirmed.

Background of the New Chief Selector

Habibul Bashar brings extensive experience to his new role, having been a part of the national selection panel from 2011 to 2024. He recently assumed the position of chairman of selectors following the formation of the new government earlier this year. His appointment marks a strategic shift in Bangladesh's cricketing administration, with a clear focus on long-term planning and player development.

The potential return of Shakib Al Hasan, one of Bangladesh's most celebrated cricketers, could significantly bolster the team's prospects as they build towards major international tournaments, including the 2027 ODI World Cup. The selectors' approach underscores a commitment to careful preparation and sustained contribution from experienced players.
