The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has broken its silence regarding the surprising senior India call-up of young batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. The development comes on the heels of his historic performance in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season, where he shattered multiple records and caught the attention of selectors nationwide.
In a press release issued on Wednesday, the BCCI clarified that Sooryavanshi's selection was based on his consistent and outstanding performances in domestic cricket, particularly in the Ranji Trophy and Vijay Hazare Trophy, prior to his IPL exploits. The board emphasized that the call-up was not solely a reaction to his IPL heroics but a culmination of years of hard work and stellar form across formats.
Record-Breaking IPL Season
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, a 22-year-old right-handed batsman from Mumbai, amassed 745 runs in IPL 2026 at an astonishing average of 62.08 and a strike rate of 189.34. He scored four centuries and three half-centuries, including a breathtaking 127 off 54 balls against the Chennai Super Kings. His performances helped his franchise, the Mumbai Indians, secure their sixth IPL title.
Sooryavanshi's ability to dominate both pace and spin bowling, coupled with his innovative shot-making, drew comparisons to some of the game's greats. His call-up to the senior Indian team for the upcoming T20I series against Australia has been met with widespread approval from fans and experts alike.
BCCI's Official Statement
The BCCI statement read: "Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has been a consistent performer for his state team and has shown remarkable maturity in pressure situations. His selection to the senior team is a testament to the robust domestic structure in India. We believe he has the temperament and skill to succeed at the international level."
The board also addressed concerns about rushing young talent, stating that Sooryavanshi has been under the radar of the national selectors for over a year. "His performances in the domestic circuit, including 1,200 runs in the Ranji Trophy last season, made his selection inevitable," the statement added.
Reactions from the Cricket Fraternity
Former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar praised the selection, saying, "Vaibhav has shown that he belongs on the big stage. His hunger for runs and ability to adapt make him a special talent." Meanwhile, current captain Rohit Sharma welcomed the youngster, stating, "He has earned his spot. We look forward to having him in the dressing room."
Sooryavanshi himself expressed gratitude, saying, "It's a dream come true. I am ready to give my best for the country."
Looking Ahead
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is expected to bat in the middle order for India in the T20I series. His inclusion adds depth to an already formidable batting lineup and provides a left-handed option in the top order. The first T20I against Australia is scheduled for July 15 in Bengaluru.
The BCCI has also confirmed that Sooryavanshi will be part of the squad for the subsequent ODI series, subject to his performance in the T20Is. This move signals the board's intent to invest in young talent and build a strong foundation for the 2028 T20 World Cup.
