BCCI Secretary on J&K Ranji Win: Committee Key to Success

BCCI Secretary Praises Committee for Jammu & Kashmir's Ranji Trophy Triumph

In an exclusive interview, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia highlighted the pivotal role of a sub-committee in transforming Jammu and Kashmir cricket, leading to their historic Ranji Trophy victory. Saikia described the win as a momentous occasion for Indian cricket, tracing the journey from administrative chaos to Paras Dogra lifting the trophy after defeating Karnataka in the final at Hubballi.

From Turmoil to Triumph: The Committee's Impact

Saikia explained that the Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association was in disarray from 2018 to 2020, with ongoing litigation in the High Court. In June 2021, under then-BCCI secretary Jay Shah, a sub-committee was formed following a court directive. This panel, led by current BCCI president Mithun Manhas, Brigadier Anil Gupta, and Sunil Sethi, worked tirelessly to overhaul cricket in the region.

"That committee worked day in and day out to develop the game under BCCI monitoring," Saikia said. "Within five years, J&K went from minnows to champions—a huge leap we take pride in."

Infrastructure and Future Plans

With no international-standard facilities in Jammu and Kashmir, Saikia emphasized the need for infrastructure development. He revealed that indoor cricket facilities are in the pipeline, and plans for a proper stadium are underway, pending land allotment. "The road is bright for J&K cricket," he added, stressing BCCI's goal to nurture talent across the country.

Auqib Nabi: A Symbol of Domestic Strength

Pacer Auqib Nabi, who took 100 wickets in two Ranji seasons, was highlighted as a key contributor. Saikia noted his match-winning spells in the knockout stages and credited the BCCI's scouting system. "Our selectors attend every Ranji game to ensure no talent goes unnoticed," he said, citing examples like Ishan Kishan's comeback.

Talent Identification and Centralized Systems

When asked about centralized scouting, Saikia explained that talent identification remains state-based, with franchises handling their own scouting. He praised J&K selectors for discovering Nabi from Baramulla, emphasizing the grassroots process. "Players must excel at district levels before catching national selectors' eyes," he noted.

IPL Schedule Update

Saikia provided an update on the much-anticipated 2026 IPL schedule, stating that it will be released in two to three days. Delays are due to elections in states like Assam, Bengal, and Tamil Nadu, with BCCI awaiting clearance from election authorities.

This victory marks a significant milestone in Indian cricket, showcasing the power of structured development and dedicated oversight.
