Karnataka Deputy CM Announces Free IPL Tickets for MLAs, Stadium Expansion Plans

Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar has confirmed that state legislators will receive complimentary tickets for Indian Premier League (IPL) matches, with plans to expand stadium capacity and build new facilities. The announcement came after discussions with cricket association officials and franchise representatives.

Ticket Allocation Details Finalized

Speaking to reporters at his Sadashivanagar residence in Bengaluru, Shivakumar revealed that each Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) will receive three free tickets for IPL matches. For international cricket matches, MLAs will get two complimentary tickets with an option to purchase two additional tickets.

"Today I discussed the issue of tickets to MLAs with the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) president, officials, and Royal Challengers Bangalore management," Shivakumar said. "Last week they had agreed to provide two tickets as tickets for the first match had already been sold. We met again today and closed the matter."

The Deputy CM emphasized that the arrangement is entirely optional for legislators. "If anyone is not interested in IPL tickets, they may inform us in writing and we will not provide them tickets. No one is being compelled," he clarified.

Stadium Capacity Expansion Proposed

Shivakumar also disclosed that the government has directed KSCA to submit a proposal for increasing stadium seating capacity. "We have directed them to submit a proposal to the government. After the proposal is submitted, it will be discussed at the government level and necessary approvals will be given," he stated.

The Deputy CM highlighted the potential benefits of expansion, noting that "increasing capacity by 20,000 seats would benefit the public greatly." Officials have been asked to explore land options for a new stadium as well.

Regarding suggestions for separate galleries for MLAs and ministers, Shivakumar said the government would not interfere in the cricket association's internal matters. "I won't go into all that, it is left to the KSCA officials. I will not excessively interfere in their affairs," he asserted.

Government Support for Cricket Infrastructure

Shivakumar reminded that the government has already allocated significant land to KSCA in the past. "We have already given KSCA 25 acres of land, and also given land in Tumkur and Mysuru. In Bengaluru, Cabinet approval has been given for a stadium through Karnataka Housing Board," he said.

The Deputy CM added that "what we are building in Suryanagar will benefit all sports and all people," indicating broader sports infrastructure development plans.

Political Context and Election Campaigns

Turning to political matters, Shivakumar outlined the Congress party's campaign schedule for upcoming by-elections. "Of course we have to go. I should have gone today itself. The Chief Minister has already left for Bagalkote," he said.

"Surjewala and I are going to Davanagere tomorrow, where we have some meetings. The day after I will go to Bagalkote. Then I will do another round of both constituencies," the Deputy CM detailed, adding that he would campaign in Kerala on April 5 and 6, with the visit postponed due to Easter and Good Friday.

Governance Claims and Political Comparisons

Defending the Congress party's governance model, Shivakumar contrasted it with BJP policies. "We do what we say. We have announced land rights. We have announced a health programme up to Rs 25 lakh," he claimed.

"In Assam, the BJP government gives only Rs 1,200 per month and that too only to their party workers. We will give our schemes to all beneficiaries," Shivakumar asserted, taking a swipe at the opposition party.

The Deputy CM criticized what he called false promises from the BJP, stating "We don't give false promises like the BJP which said it will deposit Rs 15 lakh in everyone's account, or that 'Acche Din' were coming. Where did Acche Din come? Not one of you got Rs 15 lakh in your account."

Other Government Matters

On the reported LPG shortage, Shivakumar said a detailed response would be given shortly. "On Tuesday morning at 9:30, Surjewala and I will hold a press conference at the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee office and speak on this matter," he announced.

Regarding his recent visit to Assam, Shivakumar mentioned sampling local cuisine and visiting religious sites. "Yes, I've visited Assam many times but had never eaten the local food. This time I did. I had the vegetarian dishes; my friends enjoyed the non-vegetarian," he shared.

Expressing confidence ahead of elections in Assam, Shivakumar predicted "Absolutely. Amit Shah says they'll win two-thirds majority. We will win two-thirds of the seats, and they'll be left with one-third."

The Deputy CM's announcements come amid ongoing political preparations and infrastructure planning, with cricket ticket allocations representing just one aspect of the government's current priorities.
