The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is set to hold crucial discussions regarding Suryakumar Yadav's future as the T20I captain. According to reliable sources, there is a strong possibility that the current T20 captain, who successfully led the team to defend the T20 title in March 2025, may not be invited to the upcoming selection meeting for the white-ball tour of Ireland and England later this month.
Selection Meeting Details
The selection meeting is likely to take place in Chandigarh or Mumbai around the one-off Test between India and Afghanistan on June 6. The matter is expected to be discussed on the sidelines of the BCCI’s apex council meeting scheduled for Thursday.
Background of the Issue
TOI first reported on April 18 that Suryakumar Yadav's position has been under scrutiny, with selectors considering a new captain. On May 31, further reports indicated that Surya was omitted from the long list of probables for this year’s Asian Games, as the selectors aim to try new captaincy options and prepare a succession plan.
It is learned that Shreyas Iyer, Tilak Varma, and Sanju Samson are the primary contenders for the captaincy role. Additionally, there is a proposal to allow vice-captain Axar Patel to take charge on an interim basis, enabling Iyer and Varma to settle into the team. Meanwhile, Shubman Gill has been asked to focus on Test and ODI cricket for now.
Form Concerns
Suryakumar Yadav has been experiencing a prolonged slump in form in international cricket since the 2024 T20 World Cup. He has also struggled to regain his rhythm in the current IPL season. Given his age of 35, it will be very difficult for the selectors to back him for the LA Olympics in 2028 and the next T20 World Cup in the same year.
