Caitlin Clark saved the Indiana Fever on Monday night, and then made sure her teammate knew exactly what she thought of her. Clark buried a go-ahead three-pointer in the final seconds to lift Indiana to a 78-76 win over the Washington Mystics, improving the Fever's record to 6-5 on the WNBA season. The clutch bucket came off a pass from Sophie Cunningham, who found her on the wing at the perfect moment. After the game, when Cunningham shared the moment on Instagram, Clark's response was short and warm.
The Winning Play
The win was the kind that sticks with a team. The Fever trailed with the clock running out and needed Clark to bail them out. She did. Clark finished with 19 points, five assists and three rebounds. Cunningham came off the bench and contributed eight points, three assists and two rebounds in 23 minutes. The numbers were modest. The final pass, less so.
Clark's Comment on Cunningham's Instagram Post
Sophie Cunningham put up a 12-photo carousel on Instagram that captured everything from her pregame fit to a video of herself and Lexie Hull in matching outfits grabbing coffee before tip-off. The caption of the post read: "'your life seems so fun' thanks, my family used to have conversations of how to deal with me :)" Clark's "Love you Soph" sat in the comments. The Fever's official Instagram account added a red heart.
The final photo in the post, though, is what got people talking. It showed Cunningham and Clark sitting in the locker room with head coach Stephanie White asking them: "You followed the plan... right?" Both players are shown staring into space. Clark's reply reads "We may have improvised," while Cunningham appears to simply shrug. Their thought bubbles tell a slightly different story: Clark thinking "worth it," Cunningham thinking "oops?" The photo was captioned: "Didn't follow the plan... Won Anyway."
Clarification from Cunningham and Hull
Cunningham later walked back any suggestion that the post was a dig at the coaching staff. "You guys read too much into things. That's THE EXACT play our coach drew up, and we executed it perfectly!" she wrote alongside the same image. The clarification came quickly, but Hull's comments added a different layer. "I think Caitlin's a great basketball player. She made a read. Sophie was able to deliver a perfect pass to her. She knocked it down when it mattered. I can't say that's exactly what we drew up, but it worked. So we'll take it any day of the week."
Impact on the Season
Whether the final play was scripted or improvised, the result was the same: a Fever win and a two-point improvement in the standings. Clark and Cunningham's chemistry, both on the court and off it, continues to be one of the more interesting storylines in Indiana this season. Next up for the Fever is a home matchup against the Chicago Sky on June 11, a game that already carries significant weight in the Eastern Conference race.
