Watson Welcomes Sanders QB Battle, Cabot Responds to Slur

Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson recently addressed the media for the first time in two years, discussing the potential quarterback competition with rookie Shedeur Sanders. Watson stated that he has known the Sanders family for years and would fully support Sanders if he becomes the starting quarterback.

Watson on Relationship with Sanders Family

Watson revealed a long-standing connection with the Sanders family. 'I have known his brother Deion Sanders Jr. all the way back when he was at SMU. Coach Chad Morris was the coach there. I used to go out there and hang out with the team, and his brother was one of the players,' Watson explained. He emphasized that both he and Sanders are focused on putting the best product on the field for the team, letting head coach Todd Monken and the organization decide who starts.

Shilo Sanders' Gender Bias Comment

Before OTAs began, Browns beat reporter Mary Kay Cabot publicly declared Watson as her QB1 choice. This prompted Shedeur's older brother, Shilo Sanders, to comment on her post: 'Mary, go make a sandwich.' The remark is widely considered a gender bias slur, implying women belong in the kitchen. When asked about the comment on 92.3 The Fan, Cabot took the high road, stating, 'I have been an inspiration for lots of women and young girls that you can go out there and do a good job in a man's world. There are so many women who have joined the football world, especially because of some of the things I've been able to do over the years. I am happy about it. And I know it will continue.'

Watson Reacts to Owner's 'Swing and Miss' Comment

Watson also addressed Cleveland Browns owner Jimmy Haslam's recent 'swing and miss' comment regarding the team's trade for Watson. Using a baseball analogy, Watson said, 'It happens and things like that. One of my favorite baseball players is Bryce Harper. Sometimes he swings and misses, but he stands back up, gets another opportunity, and hits a home run. So, you never know when the opportunity might show up, and that is what I have right now.'

As the Browns prepare for the upcoming season, the quarterback battle between Watson and Sanders remains a key storyline. Both players are ready to compete, and the decision ultimately rests with the front office and head coach.
