The under-construction Central Vista metro corridor, stretching from Indraprastha to RK Ashram Marg, is poised to significantly ease the passenger load at Rajiv Chowk, one of the busiest stations in the Delhi Metro network. Spanning 9.9 kilometers, this corridor will feature nine stations, including four interchange stations, providing commuters with multiple route options and reducing congestion at existing interchange hubs.
Interchange Stations and Route Planning
The four interchange stations on this corridor are RK Ashram Marg, Indraprastha, Shivaji Stadium, and Central Secretariat. Central Secretariat will become a triple interchange station in the phase V(A) expansion, connecting the Yellow, Violet, and Magenta lines. A dedicated subway is also planned between Rajiv Chowk and Shivaji Stadium stations, enabling seamless transfers between the Airport Express, Yellow, and Blue lines.
A senior Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) official stated, “The proposed interchanges with the Blue Line at RK Ashram Marg and Indraprastha are expected to significantly reduce passenger load at Rajiv Chowk.” Commuters traveling from Noida and Vaishali towards the Central Vista area will be able to interchange at Indraprastha, while those from Dwarka and west Delhi can conveniently interchange at RK Ashram Marg. This will provide direct access to destinations along the Central Vista corridor without requiring travel through Rajiv Chowk, thereby improving network efficiency and passenger convenience.
Current Footfall at Rajiv Chowk
Rajiv Chowk has consistently recorded some of the highest daily footfalls in the DMRC network, ranking as the second busiest station after Kashmere Gate. In 2025, it recorded 3.8 lakh footfall, followed by 3.7 lakh in 2024 and 3.5 lakh in 2023.
Construction and Design
Construction of the corridor began on March 25, and the line is being designed with station platforms capable of accommodating six-coach trains. DMRC emphasized that the project will significantly improve connectivity to the heart of Delhi, providing efficient access to major government offices, judicial institutions, national memorials, and convention facilities. Key landmarks directly connected include Kartavya Bhavan, India Gate, National War Memorial, Delhi High Court, Baroda House, Supreme Court, and Bharat Mandapam.
A new dedicated depot is planned near Majlis Park to cater to the operational requirements of the Central Vista corridor.
Impact on Magenta Line
With the addition of this corridor, the total length of the Magenta Line will increase to 88.4 kilometers, making it the longest in the DMRC network. The line will run all the way from Botanical Garden to Inderlok as a fully driverless corridor, serving stations in Noida, south Delhi, and central Delhi.
