Yuzvendra Chahal Embraces Sobriety and Fitness for IPL 2026 Revival with Punjab Kings
Indian leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal is approaching the upcoming IPL 2026 season with a transformed mindset and a rigorous focus on physical conditioning, seeking to convert a turbulent period in his career into a rejuvenated beginning with the Punjab Kings franchise. The 35-year-old cricketer, who last represented India in 2023, has disclosed a significant personal lifestyle alteration that he believes will prolong his playing career and elevate his on-field performance.
Chahal's Decision to Quit Alcohol for Enhanced Performance
In a candid conversation with former South African captain AB de Villiers on his YouTube program, Chahal announced that he has entirely abstained from alcohol consumption. "This year, my mind has decided that I will prioritize my body's well-being first. And I have some positive news to share: I have stopped drinking alcohol," Chahal revealed. "It has been more than six months since I quit. At 35 years of age, I aim to be more agile and committed, striving to deliver 150 percent effort for my team. As a senior bowler entering the IPL, I want spectators and peers to observe me and think 'there is something to learn from him'," he elaborated.
Overcoming Professional and Personal Adversities
This resolution follows a demanding few years for Chahal, marked by both professional stagnation and personal turmoil. Once on the cusp of becoming India's inaugural bowler to achieve 100 T20I wickets, Chahal remains stationary at 96 wickets, while contemporaries like Arshdeep Singh, Jasprit Bumrah, and Hardik Pandya have surpassed this milestone. Off the pitch, Chahal navigated a difficult phase, including a highly publicized divorce from Dhanashree Verma last year after enduring extensive media scrutiny.
Impactful IPL 2025 Season and Lingering Disappointments
Despite these setbacks, Chahal played a pivotal role in Punjab Kings' impressive IPL 2025 campaign. Appearing in 14 matches, he secured 16 wickets at an economy rate of 9.56 and ascended to become the league's all-time leading wicket-taker during the season. Under the leadership of Shreyas Iyer, Punjab advanced to the final but were defeated by Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Chahal acknowledged that the loss remains poignant, citing the absence of all-rounder Marco Jansen as a critical element. "In the championship match, we sorely missed Jansen as he was unavailable. Had he been present, we would have undoubtedly clinched the title," Chahal asserted.
Fitness Challenges and Renewed Determination
The leg-spinner also confessed that he was not in optimal physical condition during the tournament's crucial stages. "I felt somewhat disheartened with myself. Following the KKR encounter, I sustained a rib fracture, and subsequently, my knuckle was fractured. Consequently, during the semifinal and final, I was incapable of bowling my conventional leg-spin deliveries effectively. This year, my primary objective is to safeguard my body's health," he explained.
Chahal's Legacy and Punjab Kings' Title Aspirations
With 221 wickets in 174 matches, Chahal continues to hold the record as the IPL's highest wicket-taker and will again be instrumental in Punjab's quest for championship glory. As the franchise gears up to commence its IPL 2026 journey on March 31 against the Gujarat Titans, Chahal's newfound discipline and concentration could be pivotal in their endeavor to secure a first-ever IPL title.
