Aakash Chopra Applauds Rishabh Pant's Willingness to Evolve His Game
As the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 approaches, all eyes are on Lucknow Super Giants captain Rishabh Pant, who carries immense expectations both as a batter and a leader. Former Indian cricketer and renowned broadcaster Aakash Chopra has expressed his admiration for Pant's recent acknowledgment that he needs to make significant changes to his gameplay. Speaking on JioStar, Chopra highlighted this self-awareness as a positive and heartening development ahead of the 19th season of the IPL.
Pant's Unique Perspective on Cricket
Chopra emphasized that Rishabh Pant possesses a distinct and unconventional view of the game, which often sets him apart from traditional cricketers. He recalled instances during Test cricket where Pant engaged in discussions with former head coach Rahul Dravid, who was critical of Pant's batting approach. Despite this, Chopra credited Pant for his ability to perceive match situations differently, a trait that has both intrigued and puzzled many in the cricketing world.
"We sometimes fail to understand what Rishabh Pant brings to the table and how he sees the game unfold," Chopra stated. "To give credit where it's due, Pant sees the game very differently from most of us who see it conventionally."
The Crucial Step of Seeking Guidance
What Chopra finds most encouraging is Pant's acceptance that his current methods require adjustment. The cricketer-turned-analyst noted that Pant has recognized the need for a new blueprint in his game, acknowledging that something has not been clicking despite his undeniable talent. This realization has led Pant to seek help from former India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh, with whom he has been practicing ahead of the new IPL season.
"But the most heartening thing for me is his acceptance that he needs to change something in his game," Chopra explained. "He needs to look for a blueprint. Something is not going right. He knows he is that good. The fact that he has approached Yuvraj Singh for help shows he acknowledges that he needs guidance, help and assistance. That is a great sign."
Chopra further expressed that given Pant's exceptional quality, talent, and skills, it is almost a travesty that he has not been dominating white-ball cricket as expected. This self-initiated step towards improvement, therefore, marks a pivotal moment in Pant's career.
Scrutiny and the Path Forward
Rishabh Pant, who was bought by Lucknow Super Giants for a record Rs 27 crore ahead of IPL 2025 and will lead the team this year, faces justified scrutiny according to Chopra. He described Pant as a prisoner of his own reputation, known for playing unorthodox shots and often neglecting to grind out runs when necessary. Last season, despite having opportunities to rebuild his form, Pant persisted with risky shots, drawing criticism from various quarters.
Having been part of India's T20 World Cup-winning squad in Barbados, Pant now finds himself out of contention for the national side. The selectors have shifted their focus from a middle-order wicketkeeper to openers and those who can bat at number three, leaving Pant in a challenging position.
"The scrutiny around Rishabh Pant is justified," Chopra remarked. "While the IPL is massive, representing India remains the ultimate priority, and losing that spot means it's time for him to go back to the drawing board."
As IPL 2026 draws near, Pant's journey of self-improvement and adaptation will be closely watched by fans and analysts alike. His willingness to change and seek mentorship could be the key to unlocking his full potential and reclaiming his spot in the national team.
