Dalic ends nine-year tenure after Portugal defeat
Zlatko Dalic has resigned as head coach of the Croatia national football team, ending a nine-year reign that included a runners-up finish at the 2018 FIFA World Cup and a third-place medal in 2022. The decision came after Croatia’s 2-1 loss to Portugal in the Round of 32 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, a result that eliminated the team without a podium finish.
The Croatian Football Federation announced Dalic’s departure on social media on Wednesday, July 8, 2026. In a statement, the federation thanked Dalic for his leadership, achievements, and the unity he fostered within the squad. “A humble arrival. An unforgettable journey. A proud farewell. Following nearly nine years, head coach Zlatko Dalic has decided to close his incredibly successful chapter with Croatia,” the statement read.
Golden era under Dalic
Under Dalic, Croatia reached the 2018 World Cup final, losing to France, and secured third place in 2022 by defeating Morocco. However, the 2026 campaign fell short of expectations. Croatia opened with a 4-2 defeat to England, then bounced back with a 1-0 win over Panama and a 2-1 victory against Ghana. The Round of 32 loss to Portugal ended their tournament.
Dalic’s tenure also included successful qualification campaigns for multiple tournaments. The federation highlighted his ability to earn respect from players, staff, and opponents. “The results speak of your coaching virtues. The respect you’ve earned from your players, staff, and opponents speaks volumes about the person you are,” the statement added.
Future unclear after exit
When asked about his future after the Portugal match, Dalic told Reuters, “God knows what will happen in the next World Cup, but we’ll talk about it in Croatia.” His resignation now opens the search for a new head coach as Croatia looks ahead to future competitions.
