CSK Files Official Complaint with BCCI Over DJ's 'Stereotypical' Song at RCB Match
In a significant development, the Indian Premier League franchise Chennai Super Kings (CSK) has formally complained to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) about the DJ's song selection and comments during their recent match against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). The incident occurred at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium on April 5, as reported by The Indian Express.
Details of the Complaint and Song Controversy
According to the complaint, the DJ played the track "Dosa, idli, sambar, chutney, chutney" during the match, which CSK described as "not in good taste." This song is frequently associated with memes that perpetuate stereotypes about South Indian culture. CSK emphasized that the references to traditional Tamil Nadu foods like dosa and idli in the lyrics were perceived as mocking and stereotyping their regional identity, potentially offending fans and players alike.
Escalating Rivalry and Historical Context
This issue arises amid a heightened rivalry between CSK and RCB, with RCB having secured four consecutive victories against CSK in recent matches. CSK managing director Kasi Viswanathan highlighted the unusual nature of the incident, stating, "The DJs are usually around to support the home team. But at the Chinnaswamy Stadium, it was different." The controversy traces back to a 2025 episode involving RCB player Jitesh Sharma, who was mocked by Chennai's DJ after a viral video showed him singing the same song. In that video, shared before a match, RCB players were asked about their thoughts on Chennai, and while others gave general answers, Jitesh sang the stereotypical lyrics, sparking backlash from CSK supporters.
CSK's Response and Measures Taken
Following the 2025 incident, CSK implemented strict guidelines to ensure their staff maintain neutrality and respect during matches. Viswanathan noted, "After that incident, there hasn't been any repeat of it. The DJ isn't supposed to make any comment on the opposition players. Moreover, we are fortunate to have a lovely fanbase that cheers us in numbers." These steps were aimed at preventing similar occurrences and fostering a more inclusive environment in IPL games.
Broader Implications for IPL and Sportsmanship
This complaint underscores ongoing concerns about cultural sensitivity and sportsmanship in high-profile cricket tournaments like the IPL. It raises questions about the role of entertainment elements, such as DJs, in potentially exacerbating regional tensions or offending fan bases. The BCCI's response to CSK's complaint could set a precedent for how such issues are handled in future matches, emphasizing the need for respectful conduct across all IPL venues.
