AB de Villiers Urges Abhishek Sharma to Embrace Greater Responsibility in IPL 2026
De Villiers: Sharma Must Take More Responsibility in IPL 2026

AB de Villiers Calls for Abhishek Sharma to Step Up Ahead of IPL 2026

Former South African cricket legend AB de Villiers has issued a pointed message to Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) batter Abhishek Sharma, urging him to assume greater responsibility as the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season approaches. In a recent discussion on JioStar, de Villiers highlighted that Sharma, now 25 years old, must transition from a promising talent to a consistent performer under increasing media and public scrutiny.

Consistency and Mental Fortitude Key for Sharma

De Villiers acknowledged Sharma's explosive performances in the last two IPL seasons, where he scored over 400 runs each time with a strike rate around 200, including an "unbelievable" IPL 2025 campaign. However, he stressed that inconsistency, particularly during the T20 World Cup where Sharma had a "quiet tournament" despite a good finish in the final, remains a critical issue. "He's 25, not 20 anymore. So, this is definitely the phase where he has to start taking more responsibility," de Villiers stated, adding that being the world's number one T20I batter brings expectations that can feel overwhelming.

The former cricketer emphasized that Sharma's success hinges on overcoming mental battles and fine-tuning his game plan. He explained, "It's a personal challenge he will have to overcome mentally. Being the number one international T20I batter in the world comes with expectation, and that is the most dangerous word in cricket, when you feel like the whole world is closing in on you."

Strategic Adjustments and Match-Up Awareness

De Villiers advised Sharma to enhance his understanding of match situations and respect different bowling match-ups. He illustrated this with an example: "A bowler comes on, suppose it's Bumrah, and the game is on the line. How do you handle that? Do you attack him, or do you respect it and get to the other end? That is where you have to be true to yourself as a batter."

He further elaborated that Sharma needs to recognize when a bowler is executing well and adapt accordingly. "You have to feel, 'There's a threat here, I'm not comfortable, I'm not going to give it away. I'll give it a couple of minutes and see if something else comes up.' I think that is the only missing link in his game still," de Villiers noted. He encouraged Sharma to trust his established blueprint, believe in it more than ever, and stick to it for longevity and consistency in his career.
