Tushar Deshpande's Ice-Cool Final Over Secures Rajasthan Royals' Dramatic Victory
In a heart-stopping finish at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Saturday night, Mumbai fast bowler Tushar Deshpande delivered a masterclass in death bowling to fashion Rajasthan Royals' thrilling six-run victory over Gujarat Titans. With Gujarat needing just 11 runs from the final over, Deshpande displayed nerves of steel, firing pinpoint yorkers and low full tosses to concede a mere four runs while claiming a crucial wicket, earning widespread praise that many believe has been long overdue.
Years of Toil Finally Pay Off
For years, the 30-year-old pacer known as the 'Kalyan Express' has been toiling diligently in domestic cricket and the Indian Premier League without receiving significant recognition or reward. Unlike many fast bowlers who seem to appear magically fit only for the IPL, Deshpande has consistently put his heart and soul into bowling across all domestic tournaments for Mumbai.
His dedication was evident in the 2025-26 Ranji Trophy quarterfinal at the MCA-BKC ground, where he stood out despite Mumbai's six-wicket defeat, taking impressive figures of 4/33 and 2/67 with lively spells that showcased his potential.
IPL Journey and Recent Challenges
Deshpande enjoyed a successful stint with Chennai Super Kings from 2022-24 under the legendary captaincy of MS Dhoni. Subsequently, Rajasthan Royals acquired him for Rs 6.50 crores, but the seasoned pacer struggled during IPL-2025, managing just nine wickets in ten matches at an average of 37.27 and an economy rate of 10.62.
When rookie pacer Brijesh Sharma made his debut in Rajasthan Royals' first match of IPL-2026 against Chennai Super Kings at Guwahati, many assumed Deshpande had been dropped. However, sources reveal he actually missed the opener due to a freak injury suffered just hours before the game when a glass fell on his foot in his hotel room.
This setback followed an ankle injury that required surgery and forced Deshpande to miss the entire 2024-25 domestic season, making his comeback performance even more remarkable.
Coaching Support and Technical Development
During the 2025-26 domestic season, Deshpande worked extensively with former India and Mumbai pacer Dhawal Kulkarni, who currently serves as Mumbai's bowling coach. Kulkarni expressed no surprise at Deshpande's last-over heroics, noting his exceptional yorker control and attacking mindset.
"He has got a very good yorker with excellent control and can execute it well whenever he wants, as we witnessed in yesterday's match," Kulkarni told reporters on Sunday. "He backs his yorkers in death overs and maintains an attacking mindset with the new ball, always looking to take wickets."
Kulkarni emphasized that he encouraged Deshpande to stick to his core competency of aggressive, wicket-taking bowling without excessive concern about conceding runs. "Throughout the season, we backed him to just attack and go for wickets. He's an attacking bowler who always wants to pick wickets, and I'm a coach who will always back his bowlers," Kulkarni explained.
National Prospects and Future Potential
Despite having played just two T20 Internationals for India back in July 2024, Deshpande has remained on the radar of national selectors. Kulkarni, who represented India in 12 ODIs and two T20Is, believes Deshpande deserves another opportunity at the international level. "He has got a good attitude, always puts in the hard yards, maintains good pace consistently in the 140s, and has performed well season after season," Kulkarni asserted.
Former first-class pacer Pradeep Sunderam, who has worked with Deshpande at the Mumbai Cricket Association's BKC Academy where he serves as a senior coach, highlighted pace as the bowler's greatest asset. "His biggest strength is that he has pace and can consistently bowl in the 140s with a sharp bouncer," Sunderam noted.
Sunderam recalled advising Deshpande against compromising pace for accuracy after he bowled 11 wides in an IPL match. "I told him never to cut down on your pace, as that would prove counterproductive. Pace is your biggest asset. If you lose your pace, you will be one amongst many and lose that special quality in your bowling," Sunderam emphasized.
Looking ahead, Sunderam identified areas for development: "After the season concludes, we will work on developing his variations. Another area Tushar needs to address is his tendency to leak runs occasionally. He takes wickets but can be expensive at times, particularly when he gets carried away while bowling well."
