MS Dhoni's Mentorship Sparks Noor Ahmad's Match-Winning Performance in IPL 2026
In a revealing post-match discussion, Chennai Super Kings assistant bowling coach Sridharan Sriram disclosed how veteran wicketkeeper-batter MS Dhoni played a pivotal role in shaping Noor Ahmad's match-winning performance against Kolkata Knight Riders. The young spinner delivered exceptional figures of 3/21 in his four overs, significantly contributing to Chennai's victory in their IPL 2026 encounter on Tuesday.
Dhoni's Detailed Net Session Guidance
Sriram emphasized the importance of a specific practice session where Dhoni engaged in an extended conversation with Noor Ahmad about refining his leg-break deliveries. "Even MS had a long chat with him in one of the practice sessions, especially about getting his leg-break going," Sriram explained. "I think it was very helpful today, and the results were there to see."
The coaching staff noted that this technical advice proved crucial during the match, where Noor effectively broke Kolkata's middle order just as they were building momentum in their chase of 193 runs. His timely intervention in the 11th over, where he dismissed Ajinkya Rahane and Cameron Green on consecutive deliveries, reduced Kolkata to 85/5 from a promising position of 79/3.
Pitch Conditions and Technical Adjustments
Sriram provided detailed analysis of how pitch conditions complemented Noor's improved technique. "The wicket helped today. There was a little bit of turn for him," he observed. "The other wickets are quite flat, but today it was a little slower through the air. There was more side spin on the ball and more drop."
The assistant coach stressed the fundamental importance of deviation for spin bowlers: "I think to be able to get some deviation off the surface is very important. That is what he's been working on." He acknowledged that while some pitches would remain batting-friendly, maintaining an aggressive approach with proper revolutions on the ball would continue yielding benefits.
Season Performance and Strategic Impact
This match represented a significant breakthrough for Noor Ahmad this season, with three of his four total wickets coming in this single game. The coaching staff attributed his earlier limited returns to the nature of pitches in initial tournament matches, which offered less assistance to spin bowlers.
Sriram elaborated on the strategic mindset required for modern spin bowling: "Everybody accepts there are going to be days when the wickets are going to be very flat. But still looking to be aggressive, putting revs on the ball and getting the ball to spin will definitely help him a lot, and that's where you can induce mistakes."
Despite late resistance from Rovman Powell (31 not out) and Ramandeep Singh (35), Kolkata Knight Riders could never recover sufficiently from Noor's middle-order strikes, ultimately falling short in their chase. This victory reinforces Chennai Super Kings' position in the tournament while highlighting the valuable mentorship dynamic between experienced players like Dhoni and emerging talents like Noor Ahmad.
