Rahul Dravid Celebrates Indian Cricket's Fulfilled Potential on the Field
Former India captain and head coach Rahul Dravid has expressed immense satisfaction with the current state of Indian cricket, stating that the nation's vast potential is now being fully realized through consistent success in international tournaments. In a recent interview with Star Sports, Dravid reflected on India's remarkable winning streak in global events over the past two years.
India's Dominance in ICC Tournaments
Dravid highlighted India's impressive achievements, including victories in the last two men's T20 World Cups, the women's ODI World Cup, the men's U-19 World Cup, and the women's U-19 T20 World Cup. He emphasized that this success is a testament to the talent and infrastructure that have long been present in Indian cricket.
"It just kind of feels right, right?" Dravid remarked. "Almost everything coming together at this point of time where Indian cricket has always had great potential and it's about realising that potential on the field as well. Off the field, I think we've always had everything we needed, and on the field, it's been great to see that potential being realised."
Factors Behind the Success
Dravid attributed India's triumphs to a combination of factors that have converged effectively. He praised the contributions of players, administrators, coaches, and fans, noting the robust domestic and junior cricket systems in place.
- Amazing talent among players
- Strong administrative support from the BCCI
- Excellent coaching staff and infrastructure
- Incredible fan base that deserves the success
Reflecting on his debut in 1996, Dravid said, "It's been phenomenal. It's just been amazing to see the way Indian cricket has grown over these three decades. The kind of supporters and fans that we have deserved all of this to come together, to have success on the field. It's amazing to see how all of that is coming together now."
Praise for Current Team and Sanju Samson
Dravid, who coached India to the T20 World Cup win in 2024, commended the current side for handling immense expectations and emerging victorious. He specifically mentioned the leadership of Suryakumar Yadav and Gautam Gambhir in guiding the team to glory.
He was particularly pleased with Sanju Samson, who was adjudged the Player of the Tournament for his stellar performances in the final games. "It was really nice to see Sanju be able to sort of get it all together in those final three games - very important games for India," Dravid stated. "For a long time, Sanju has been in and out of the team. He has performed well, he also has had some tough times. It was just really good to see someone like him who's worked pretty hard. It's really nice to see when it all comes together and the success that he did at such a critical and important phase for Indian cricket."
Honoured with Lifetime Achievement Award
During the BCCI's annual awards function, Dravid was honoured with the Col CK Nayudu Lifetime Achievement Award. Expressing gratitude, he said, "I feel very grateful for receiving the award. Very grateful for the many opportunities that I've received in my life and the opportunities that I've got. I was lucky to have played with some of the greatest cricketers and been lucky to have travelled the world playing for the country. I've been lucky to be involved in the game after I retired as well and very humbled by the opportunities that the game is given."
Dravid's insights underscore a golden era for Indian cricket, where potential is being transformed into tangible achievements on the global stage.
