Dubai Indians Find Joy in Cricket World Cup Amid Regional Unrest
As conflict raged in the region and a tense cricket match unfolded in Ahmedabad, Indian expatriates in the United Arab Emirates came together to celebrate a moment of national pride. Varsha Lohia, a yoga and gym instructor based in Dubai, was among the many who found respite from the surrounding tensions through the thrill of the World Cup final.
A Welcome Distraction from Disruptions
"Nine of us were crammed on sofas at my friend Madhur's home, shouting ourselves hoarse with our eyes glued to the television screen," recounted Lohia, who has lived in Dubai for 24 years after marrying into a Kolkata family. "For those nail-biting four hours last evening, we forgot everything else in the world. Amid the disruptions and drone attacks we witnessed from our windows just days before, the World Cup kept us going and gave us something to look forward to."
Her daughter, Riya, a 19-year-old college student, echoed this sentiment. "With my father away in Australia and airspace disruptions, the past few days haven't been easy. But the cricket matches, especially from the semi-final onward, made things somewhat bearable." Following India's victory, the family celebrated with pizza indoors while the children and their Shih Tzu, Nico, enjoyed ice cream outside.
Community Gatherings Strengthen Bonds
Rahul Bhattad, a real estate professional in Dubai since 2008, organized a viewing party for 30 friends and colleagues at a villa in Damac Lagoons. His wife Sunayna and 10-year-old daughter Maisha joined in cheering for Team India. "We always gather for high-adrenaline matches, but usually it's about 15 people at most," Bhattad explained. "This was the first time 30 of us came together. We knew we had to make it special when India reached the finals during a time when drones and missiles were impacting West Asia."
Bhattad noted that from the first six overs of batting and bowling, the group felt confident about India's victory. "Everyone was upbeat from the very beginning," he said. They had pre-ordered Indian and Chinese food in anticipation of the win.
Fostering Positivity and Confidence
Beyond the celebration, Bhattad emphasized the event's deeper significance. "It was a great way to show community feelings, camaraderie, and instill positivity and confidence among fellow Indians. While our government provided excellent support and maintained order, there are Indian families here for just two or three years who might not realize that life continues normally even during crises like the pandemic."
Abu Dhabi Residents Enjoy Uninterrupted Celebration
In Abu Dhabi, engineer Biswa Chatterjee shared a similar experience. "We face evacuation alerts almost daily, rushing to the basement whenever there's a warning," he said. "Thankfully, last night there was no alert, and we watched the entire match uninterrupted, celebrating with home-cooked delicacies."
For these Indian expatriates, the Cricket World Cup victory provided not just sporting triumph but a vital sense of normalcy and unity during uncertain times.
