Doku Leaves World Cup Camp for Birth of Son
Manchester City and Belgium star Jeremy Doku became a father for the first time on Monday, welcoming a baby boy named Praise with his wife, Shireen. The 24-year-old winger left Belgium's FIFA World Cup 2026 camp in the United States to travel to London for the birth, as confirmed by the Belgian Football Association (RBFA).
Permission Granted for Special Moment
Doku was given permission to leave the national side just before their group stage match against Iran to be present with his wife. The RBFA released a statement saying: "Jeremy received the message yesterday, before the match, that the birth was imminent. In consultation with the Red Devils' medical staff, it was decided to temporarily give him the opportunity to join his wife in London."
Health Concerns Addressed
Doku's availability for the Iran game was already in question due to a respiratory infection that kept him away from training in Los Angeles. However, team doctor Brahim Hacene confirmed the player was healthy enough for the transatlantic flight. "Since he had already been receiving the adjusted medication for several days, he was able to fly without medical risk to be with his family during this special moment," Hacene said. He added: "Everything went very well, and mother, father, and son are doing excellent. Jeremy will rejoin the group in Seattle tomorrow (Tuesday) evening."
Belgium's Frustrating Campaign
Belgium's World Cup campaign has been disappointing so far, with draws against Egypt and Iran. Doku's departure drew criticism from some quarters, including a TV presenter who faced severe social media backlash after suggesting fathers were "useless" during childbirth and that the World Cup should take priority. The broadcaster issued a public apology and suspended the presenter.
Return Ahead of Must-Win Match
Doku is expected to rejoin coach Rudi Garcia's squad in Seattle on Tuesday evening ahead of a crucial match against New Zealand on Friday. Belgium needs a win to keep their knockout stage hopes alive.
