Five Killed as Speeding Bike Crashes into Car in Mahabubnagar

A tragic road accident in the early hours of Monday claimed five lives, including two children, on the Mahabubnagar bypass road. According to police, a Suzuki Hayabusa motorcycle traveling at an estimated 160 kmph—nearly three times the permitted speed limit of 60 kmph—crashed into a Hyundai Verna sedan. The superbike was reportedly involved in a street race with a group of bikers at the time of the incident.

Details of the Accident

The motorcycle rider, Mohammad Avez (29), and his pillion rider, Yakub Afzal (30), died on the spot. Three passengers in the rear of the car—Arshiya Begum (28), her 18-month-old son Amer, and a 10-year-old named Huzaifa—succumbed to injuries at the hospital. The car's driver, Basith (Arshiya's husband), and three other occupants sustained minor injuries but survived.

The car was returning to Palakonda in Mahabubnagar from a family gathering at Christianpally. Mahabubnagar ASP NB Ratnam stated, "There were eight people in the car. Three occupants were killed on the spot, three suffered minor injuries, and Basith escaped unharmed." The superbike struck the rear left door of the Verna as the driver was taking a right turn at a median near Palakonda.

Investigation and Legal Action

Police revealed that Avez was the second owner of the bike, which still bore a Haryana registration number. He had recently completed the transfer of ownership but had not yet affixed new plates. Preliminary investigation indicates that Avez was part of a group of 12 bikers from Hyderabad who had attended a friend's family function in Mahabubnagar. They reached the town around 10:30 pm and were returning to Hyderabad at 12:30 am when the accident occurred.

ASP Ratnam noted, "The speedometer needle was stuck at 160 kmph, indicating that Avez was riding at an even higher speed." Overspeeding is considered the primary cause. Police have preserved Avez's viscera to test for alcohol consumption. Arshiya's family alleged that the bikers were racing each other, and authorities are investigating these claims.

A case has been registered under BNS Sections 106(1) (causing death due to negligence) and 125(a) (causing hurt by an act endangering life or personal safety of others). The bodies were handed over to families after post-mortems at Mahabubnagar area hospital.
